Xsara Vts Box But Looking For A Longer 5Th?

Recommended Posts

HERMAN

Is it possible to fit a longer 5th gear to the xsara vts box (Diesel?)?

I just want a better motorway ration.

I do not use 5th on the track and I am happy with the rest of the rations?

I have searched but I am getting lost.

Cheers

Neil

5th is generally the same on the odd couple of HDI box's I have seen, you need to watch the bush for 5th thou as they can vary in dia

how about fitting a lower ratio cwp? - from a 4.4 to maybe a 4.2

Changing the CWP would change all the ratios. I am only really looking the change the 5th.

thanks

Neil

Are you sure it's a xsara Vts box? By sounds of it, it isn't

You had one off me Miles that turned out to be a 405 derv box. I took that out of that Xsara Vts it lived in

What rpm are you pulling on the motorway just to check it is actually a VTS box?

As said, I think you'll struggle to find a longer fifth, looking through some of the gear ratios spreadsheets, the only box listed with a longer fifth is one from a 405 1.9 GR that apparently has a 0.658 fifth but good luck finding one fo those, if it'll fit your box.

A VTS/MI Box should be 20 mph per 1000rpm in top from memory.

If you want a longer fifth you could swap to a 1.6 box with the fifth gear swapped with an MI 5th, this will give 22mph per 1000rpm.

Search for the gearbox calculator spreadsheet that will help you decide.

The car is currently in bits for a respray. So it can not check what the rpm/ speed is. I am confident that it is the correct gear box. The ratios are great through the rest of the gears and 5th is not that bad but I would have liked a longer 5th. If I guess it was about 4000 rpm at 80 may be a bit lower. I know from track days that the rev limter in 4th is about 125mph?

I was just thinking that a diesel 5th might be a little better for motorway speeds.

How much motorway driving do you do a week?

When you put it that way not much but i am planning a trip to lemans and while the gearbox is sat on my garage floor thought I might change the 5th. I had got the idea that it was an easy job and worth doing.

For the trip to Le Mans fit a larger rolling radius set of wheels.

Keep your present set as your normal driving set and then a second set for a long trip.

The second set could be 195/65/15 giving you nearer 21.5mph/1000 revs in 5th. Or even pick up some 16s and use 195/60/16 just for that trip.

Just an idea as it is a one off long trip.

Neils gearbox is deffinetly a VTS box, rpm vs speed is the same as my car.

As said above, the 405 1.9 GR seems to be the only be1/3 car with a longer 5th than the VTS box.

A diesel gearbox has very close to the same gear ratios as the VTS box, fifth is the same ratio @ 0.757.

Only the final drive is different making the gears longer.
