[Body_Work] My Gti Respray And Stuff!

Recommended Posts

Robbiedundy

Not had an update in a while so here it is, my dad broke his car so has taken over the whole garage so I had nowhere to work for a while but we've cleared out a fairly large shed which I just moved into, lots more space for 205 junk :)

Got this pile of parts for free, someone was going to throw it all in a skip - set of pepperpots with decent rubber, gti valances, bunch of diesel parts :D also got a set of lowering springs with it but I've got no idea what size they are - they've got '75-004 Front 24/98' stamped on them if anyone knows what that means?

So now that I've got somewhere to work again I'll be starting on the underneath, taking the beam & petrol tank of rust treating it and probs wax oyling it then on with the respray.. which I've still not bought paint for.. but I sorted out a proper air fed mask which I can borrow!

That's it for now.

Thats a cracker shed! Nothing wrong with that set up... although if that web around the skylight is anything to go by, then your sharing it with the mother of all spiders! :o

Nice project! Keep up the good work!...

Haha, yeah there's a few massive webs.. and I'm not too fond of spiders  I was working on the car earlier today, heard this buzzing noise above me.. It was a fly getting massacred by a spider, only a wee one though. Poor fly. So anyways, I took the rear beam and petrol tank off to start refurbing the underneath, when I bought the car the ad said 'refurbished beam'.. It doesn't look very refurbished.

CA756103-FEDD-486A-83BF-2DB180965FD5-146

It's got new mounts and the shocks look pretty new that's about it, I want to take it apart and paint it up nice and shiny.. it doesn't look like it's ever been apart before but I don't really want to strip it completely as it could cost a lot for new parts if it's f*cked and I don't really have the money right now, the guy I bought it off had replaced the original for this one so it should be somewhat decent, when he took me out in the car it didn't seem abnormal at all. Are there any checks I can do without completely stripping it? I'm going to be lowering it also. Feel free to call me a p*ssy and convince me to rebuild it :P

Found this pic from my 18th birthday

Cake is epic! Just read this from the beginning, love what you are doing! Going to be so clean when you've finished. As for the engine, I wouldn't worry too much about the 1.9 lump, IIRC you can't tell the difference between the 1.6 and the 1.9 as they look identical. And for insurance try competition car insurance, insure it as a track car or something. I insured mine under road rally regs for £1200 with 2 years NCB and that was unlimited mileage and unlimited modifications providing they were in the road rally regs!

Oh so I can use a 1.6 exhaust manifold if I wanted? £1200 is quite good! I've only got 1 years ncb now. Just looked up a quote on comparethemarket and it's £1400 for me, I'm sure I can get it cheaper elsewhere though! Fairly sure there's a couple insurance companys which you can get discounts for through the forum, but I'm not 19 yet :/

Ah I was 21 when I had mine. I would have though the mani would be the same, best checking first though. Pretty sure mine had a 1.6 system on it with a 1.9 lump

Cheers, got another one yesterday!

So erm, I've been really lazy with my project atm, still working on the underneath.. should get that finished soon <_<. I've been looking for a new car for a couple months now after selling my 1.1 style, a guy I know decided to sell his 1.6 GTi after the engine blew up, so I snapped that up pretty quick for quite cheap, the plan is to put my 1.9 engine in it, wee tidy up, get it mot'd/taxed and drive it about for a while. Here's a pic of her -

1CEAF296-F473-4250-A7AA-805EDFACDA68-572

I've started a project thread for it here, not sure if it's stupid having two threads going at the same time but oh well. :D Now that the 1.9 engine is gonna be used elsewhere, I'll be needing a new one.. I'm thinking gti6 ^_^ I'm also lusting after some Sl434s right now.. Should probably pull my finger out and finish other sh*t before I start making silly plans..

Bye for now. :)

Made a fair bit of progress, swapped my standard springs for some -30mm koni ones, then put the front running gear etc all back together and bolted it on, stuck the rusty old beam on to get it rolling, spoke to a local guy and he's going to weld, prep and paint it for me, took it over to his last weekend, here's a pic of the wee pug on her journery -

1334FF39-5704-4D06-B37E-C8493954BD3A_zps

It's gonna be getting welded and prepped over winter then sprayed in spring. I'll update it every so often to show how he's getting on, he said I could help with prep to make it cheaper so it'll be good to learn how to do it properly. I've decided now that I've put my 1.9 engine in the other GTi I'm gonna buy a gti6 engine to stick in it, I'm also looking for 309 wishbones, driveshafts & rear axle, I'm also trying to convince my parents to buy me sl434s for christmas, I think it's going pretty well. Oh, and my dad broke my windscreen attempting to take it out with a screwdriver.. So I'm gonna try and get him to go halfers with me on a heated one!

Think that's about it for now.

There's some actual progress been made, the car is almost finished being prepped, all of the welding is complete. Here's a pictor -

0BD0D1DC-FA14-4437-8E09-0239498071F2_zps

Really happy with it, should be in primer soon, I can't wait to see that happen, target is to complete it for summer, I think that's realistic, I managed to find a 306 rallye which I'm gonna use as a donor car, it's had a smash to the rear quarter so it's parts will be put to good use! Picked it up for £280, pretty good I think, here's some crappy pictures -

11ADDF3B-B385-4948-A026-C7442C46135C_zps

Plan is to take out the engine, box, loom etc, take the brakes, not sure what else I might need. It also has cyclones with good winter tires which I'll be taking for spares.

The shed I was using got knocked down for a new garage to be built, so I've got nowhere to strip the 306 atm, I'll be gathering parts I still need for the project until it's built, I managed to get some 309 wishbones,

D9C0B57C-418E-4D6C-9BA7-CA8F8ED36298_zps

They need a lick of paint, but the ball joints are tight and bushes are fine I think.

Got a 309 gti rear beam, has gaz shocks which have never been used. Got it and an exhaust for £200, not bad.

5342F328-41AE-4CCD-ACF2-211A88B5A59B_zps

Someone painted it all yellow, so I'll be taking it all apart and painting it black & silver. Replacing anything thats needing it, but it should be fine.

I was going to buy 309 driveshafts then I realised they wouldn't fit in the 306 gearbox would they? Managed to persuade dad to go halfers with me on a heated windscreen. Didn't manage to persuade parents to get me sl434s for christmas :/

Not sure what exhaust to use, I've got a full magnex one I took off my red gti which I could use -

D89A1805-4713-4981-902F-CDF3636A1D34_zps

I'll sell the manifold and keep the rest if it's any use, not sure what size of pipe and boxes I need to suit the 306 engine.. as you can tell I'm not very clued up yet. :L

Some other random stuff I've been buying, Recaro half leathers, needing some tlc -

705C8D94-7ECF-4B20-BB32-C101C610B7CA_zps

Omp Strut brace -

F82B602A-E177-4DEB-BBED-0D8784CA90EA_zps

I've also got an omp lower strut brace which I got off my red gti I might use. Bought some locking aerocatches and a single wiper conversion also, still a few more bits to buy. Can't wait to see the car in paint now. Excited :D

Could fit a few 205s in there.. Anyway, got the brakes off and engine out.

Taking the 205 home either tomorrow or next weekend, so should be getting put back together soon. I want it on the road by summer! Need to learn how to solder and stuff, that'll be fun.

Bought this off eBay for £10 it's quite smart.

That's it for now, cheers.

Very late reply.. not much has happened though. Here's some pics of the 205 just after it got painted!

IMG_0624_zps833955dd.jpg

She's been tucked away in the corner since then though..

IMG_0621_zps51854c9f.jpg

The plan was, and still is (just don't know when..) to remove the rear axle and front subframe/suspension etc, then to wire wheel the underneath/wheel arches back to bare metal, kurust, prime, paint & wax oyl. Then repaint some bodgey previous jobs and reassemble.

Bought some Sl434's 2nd hand, some chips out of the paint so I'm gonna sand them down, plan is to spray them a steel grey with matt clear coat, and a polished lip.

IMG_0678_zps3bee124c.jpg

Bought a clarke 150te turbo mig welder to try and put my new 205 straight d back together.. quite a good learning experience, its not working just now.. the wire got stuck in the liner somehow so I'm replacing it with a steel one.

IMAG0064_zpsuyxc67eo.jpg

and got a new toolbox, so handy..

IMAG0062_zpso4xqcmxl.jpg

Most of my free time right now is spent trying to put the derv back on the road, shouldn't take long, maybe a couple weeks, then I'll be focusing on the gti. Got electricity in the shed now so I'm all set now, and I'm due like 17 days holiday which I have to take before January or something, so should see a lot of progress coming up :D

Very very nice! Your work is so meticulous it's making me tired thinking how much effort it has taken!

You can get single pack clear coat. But 2 k is a better product. Is easy to use just make sure your first coat is a light gripper coat and let it tack off use a extra fast air dry hardener if you have no heated booth make sure temp is not cold or windy. Try to keep job as clean as poss after paint is cured flat off with 2000 grit then mop for a glass like finish............easy as that
