Phase 1.5 Engine Swap Into A Phase 2.... Anything I Need To Be Aware O

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Wondering if you could help me out a bit please??

I have an L plate miami blue 1.9 gti, is ok but the engine is starting to show signs of its age....

So..... Having a bright idea at the time, I purchased a written off 1.9 that I'd known for years, this being an H plate.

The reason for buying this hurt little pug was that, sat in the engine bay is a fairly freshly re built engine with a few little tweeks.... Cat cam, 4 branch manifold etc etc.

Here comes my questions......

Is there any difference's that could cause problems? (Apart from the cat...)

Anything to look out for?

I'm planning to drop the engine and gearbox in 1 lump if I can as it has a new clutch and re built box sat in it too!

Any help you guys can give will be highly appreciated!

Thanks!

if it were me - id fit everything from the donor - loom etc...

i think you dont have to have a cat in the car if the engine is precat, even if the shell was a cat fitted one.

best bet before you do that is have a look on line or even visit an mot tester.

Was hoping not to touch the loom if I could help it.....

Is it not possible to swap the ecu's over then and leave the '93' loom intact?

No, the looms are different, however the other loom should plug straight in, you may need to swap a wire or two around in the plugs.

It will actually run quite well on Motronic, though I'm unsure how it copes with cams, Mine is a newer Motronic than yours and has no AFM, seems to cope well enough, depends what cam and other work has been done.

Story of my life, nothings ever straight forward!!!

Thought I'd found an easier and cheaper route than a re build......

I have paper work from a well known pug specialist but all that says is that its had a full re build with gas flowed head and cat cam??

The bloke I bought it from told me it was a stage 2 or 3 running approx 150bhp?? Seeing it when it was on the road, I belived him, it was rapid!!

As I said I've known the car for many years, even owning it for a short time in early 2000, a few owners later and when it got sold to the chap I got it off, it was tired to say the least..... Even tho it only had 92k original miles on it! The work was carried out at 94k at the cost of nearly 4 grand and now sits on 101k..... Hurt and awaiting its new home!

Leave it on Motronic, It stands a better chance on that compared to Jetronic which doesn't like anything other than a 270 degree cam, 150bhp isn;t out of this world but I doubt it is on the Std ECU

You'll have loads of issue's come MOT time, try and prove the engine is earlier than the car isn;t easy

What does 'stage 2/3' actually mean then?! If that's on standard management & inlet it'll not be 150bhp or anywhere near.

Your guess is as good as mine.... Doesnt particually bother me the power out put to be honest, its just a freshend up engine in my eyes! Alot better than whats in it!

If it turns out to be a bit tasty then its a brucie bonus!

This particular company had stated to him that it would be running between 150bhp and 160bhp when it left them.... I'm no expert on this or on the details of getting to that figure but I do know it is bloody quick!

I have tried contacting the company a few times to find out exactley what was done.... Can never get thro tho!

Also, my 93 one has PAS, what would be the story with that? Is that a straight forward conversion to get the earlier engine to accomidate this?

Should of done my homework before buying really!

Live and learn and all that......

Spoke to the fella I bought the phase 1.5 off earlier, asked him what exactly the engine had had done to it....

Its supposidly a "stage 3 gas flowed engine". Built in 2008 its only managed to do around 7k miles so should still be pretty fresh.... Hopefully anyway!

Having had a full re-build, gas flowed head, cat cam, FSE boost valve, polished crank, 4 branch manifold and supersprint exhaust (may of missed something..), the company that carried the work out where adament it would be running between 150/160bhp, untill its done and on a rolling road I shall not know true power! Would be pretty upset if it had of been me that spent £3800 on a car/engine and its not what its supposed to be!!

Any way, it had spent most of its life sat on the drive under a cover as he could not afford the insurance, but still ran it up every now and again. It got put back on the road early 2011, he driv it around up untill August 2012, then it met the lamp post, road sign and verge! All thanks to a freshly re-surfaced road, bit of rain and a moblie phone! It now sits pride of place in my back garden, looking sorry for its self and awaiting its new home! :(

Is a shame it cant be repaired really, a low milage, lazer green 1.9, made a nice car!!

Sounds a bit like it could be a LoFlow heads job?

I was thinking that too.

No way I'm afraid it would make that, Even the Skip Brown conversions listed at 150 rarely made that figure, it's the std ECU and AFM that cannot cope with the upgrades, Ditch them and it will open up allot which is why I said stay on Motronic as it stands a better chance of running right

The SBC ones would be closer than 'that' company, that's for sure, but were still nowhere near...

I'm trying to recall now but the Road Saloon engine's where 170ish on std manifolds to give you an idea, they had massive head work too along with forged bottom ends
