Scrapyard Toolkit

Recommended Posts

ORB

So, tomorrow morning I'm going the scrappers. I'm not after anything in particular, just I have a day off with no kids so I thought I would have a ratch.

Normally I know what I'm after so take just the tools for the job, but as I'm going with no intention (other than a 306 PS bottle) I'm not sure how far to go with tooling!

I'm sure you have all been here.....

In my stock I have:

Full 3/8 socket set and ratchet + extension

Ratchet screwdriver and every bit under the sun

Side cuts

Adjustable Spanner

Mole Grips

Anything else you'd take?

More a general chat thing than advice, as I can't thing if anything that you can't achive with this that may be of use for me, as I don't want any major bits.....

Breaker bar and some spanners, sometimes the adjustable just can't get into the tight spaces. Also a small tub for nuts, bolts, screws, fuses ect

I've got a stubby claw hammer which comes in handy now and then. I tend to take a few extra tools and leave them in the car, then nip and fetch them if I find something interesting

150 piece halfords box which is light enough to wander around with, and a fold up tool box with a few screwdrivers, pry bar and side cutters etc. Make sure you leave a fair bit of space in the top for the tools to breathe...

LAD! I most certainly haven't fitted an entire engine and dash board wiring loom from a GTI in a tool box.

All the basic tools you could need to most jobs, so lots of spanners and ratchet set. Stanlet, hammer, pry bar, hack saw (surprisingly useful) and as big a tool bag as you can manage without being excessively suspicious!

I usually take a 'Welshpug' too. that f***er gets anything off with just a spade and a condom.

PMSL.

A Pikey jacket...

Boots so you don't get your trainers mucky, a car seat cover, CASH...

35mm hub nut socket. Allen keys and torx bits, A decent ballpein hammer, and some sockets you don't mind bashing, never know if you spot some alloys you've been looking for ages to find, only to see they've got locking bolts.

+1 for taking a toolbox with a little breathing room.

I generally go with a socket set, spanners, screwdrivers, cutters, knife, hammer and a punch set / assorted "drifts".

I think it's also quite important to consider wearing some very long socks incase you find yourself trampling through nettles and such like. Perhaps combined with loose fitting trousers for ease of movement.

I wonder how many of the people openly boasting about getting some five fingered discount would be the first to complain about parts being stolen from their car whilst parked up?

Not exactly the same though is it..

Not saying I've ever done either, but taking a few bulb holders out of a scrap yard in your toolbox isn't exactly the same as nicking someone's alloys from their driveway!

Personally i proffer the monkey technique to getting at the higher cars, more fun, whats the point in going to the scrap yard if you can pretend your a monkey?! haha

There is something highly enjoyable spending time at a descent scrap yard without actually needing anything.

Enjoy!

I remember many years ago, bunking work and treating myself to a morning out at my local breakers.
