Value Of 205 Gti's

Recommended Posts

RickyD

Good Afternoon,

I've been offered my Dad's immaculate Mazda MX5 MK1 as he's looking to upgrade this to an Audi TT MK1 225 Coupe.

I've owned my 205 GTI 1.9 for 18months now. I've carried out a lot of cosmetic changes to take the car back to standard and slowly getting it back to it's original state.

It's a 91 H-Plate with 89,000miles and around 9 owners with part history. The tax runs out the end of this month and is MOT'd until April of next year. I only use it when it's dry, therefore not much use this year.

All the wheels have been professionally refurbished with fresh Toyo T1R's. I had an almost new standard exhaust fitted recently as the Magnex was too noisy for my liking.

It's by no means concourse, however a useable modern day classic.

It's clearly a buyer's market out there and I fully appreciate that a lot of people don't have much disposable income these days.

I would like some positive comments regarding an estimated value. Looking at the market I believe its worth from £1500 - £2000

I would love to have three cars, however financially its not a feasible option at the moment.

Many Thanks

RickyD

Hi buddy, I reluctantly sold my k plate miami this week after owning it nearly 8 years. Service history and stacks of receipts, im afraid to tally up how much ive spent on the car over the years. 127,000 miles, 10 months MOT and 5 months tax. Went for £1400 on ebay.

Like yours, mine wasnt mint but a reliable, road going daily drive.

Put it on ebay and the ad had well over a thousand views over the 7 days and around 30 people 'watching' the auction towards the end. But only recieved one genuine bid. Had people texting me about the car looking for a bargain but obviously if they couldnt be bothered to call me then i dont think they are that interested?. I dont know. I am a honest seller. Maybe someones got a bargain? Or maybe i was lucky to get that amount? Im not even sure  .

I guess your car is worth whatever someone is willing to pay. I appreciate everyone goes on ebay for a nosey and its a good place to get your car seen but be wary of the time wasters. I wish i had put mine up for sale on the forum to be honest. Maybe thats your best bet. Good luck with your sale :)

I've just bought myself a 1.9 h reg with 92k on the clock.. Body wasn't immaculate, slight dint in the front of the bonnet, very small, minor scratches here n there but generally pretty tidy, oh and the alloys were quite scuffed on closer inspection but fine at a glance!.. importantly NO RUST!

Started, idled, ran very well. No tax and 9 month MOT.. On sale for £2,300, paid £2k for it.

From doing a fair bit of browsing before hand, if you're willing to do some work to it, tend to be looking at around £1,200-1,400 (and that 's if the mileage isn't sky high)

If like me it's a matter of - doesn't have to be mint, as long as it runs without any issues and looks the part, which by the sounds of it yours is - i'd certainly be tempted to start proceeding with a £2000ish price tag.

If it cleans up well and runs with no issues it will attract the right attention for sure, and with mileage like that it's well in your favour!

Although in a lot of ways it is a buyers market, the general prices of classic cars are actually increasing (or so my old man tells me..that's his area)

Anyway, hope this can help you a little, would be nice to see a few pics if you have some..

James

I think this is one of those threads that can only really be replied with "how long is a peice of string"

Something is only worth what someone else is willing to pay..

Paid £400 for a 1990 GTI with 84,000 miles on the clock. No MOT or moved for 18 months.

Now insured (agreed) for 5k.

I agree with above, they are only worth the high money to whoever is looking for one and not what someone thinks it's worth if you know what i mean. You may get lucky: ask high money and get an easy sale or you could be keeping it a while until someone is wanting one like yours.

Everyone seems to think they are going up in value, i don't think they are...

This is how i feel the market is with good honest second hand 205 gti's. Unfortunately, for a lot of us on here, the sum of the parts that we've replaced is worth far more than the final article. Mine is a tidy example but has done 195k. I've had it for 11 years and it owes me nothing. I don't mind throwing a few hundred quid at it here and there each year to keep it sweet, i've probably pumped 5k+ into it over the years, i've never actually added up the mountain of paperwork.

I could have sold my car twice last week, once at a set of traffic lights and another in a petrol station forecourt to random askers. I will probably never sell it because someone will scrutinise it to death and beat me down to a grand or so, it isn't worth the hassle. I haven't seen prices rise considerably (apart from the occasional stored restored one that asks big bucks on ebay), all i've noticed is that new parts from websites \ Peugeot are getting harder to source or are now NFP.

At the moment, these cars are not an investment as the majority of them need a lot of work \ time \ money to be contenders. Buy one, get it running nicely and get out and enjoy it!

I brought that Topaz blue 1.9 GTI that was listed on E bay and Piston heads for a £1000 a few months a go, I walked a way with it for £380 with short tax and MOT, polishes up really well and had a set of brand new tyres and refurbed wheels, so the car was worth it just for wheels and tyres but I wanted another 205 GTI to drive and enjoy and that is what I am doing as I have got to the stage with my silver 205 that it is pretty much concourse now. I all ways say to people with 205's in good condition to try there hardest and keep it as they are going one way and that is up. I have be lucky over the last 10 years to pick up cheap 205's when no one wanted them and brake them up and store the parts to keep my fleet going.

They will go up in value, you can guarantee that! Enough of them have been scrapped, crashed or just ruined for people to want to pay a little more for them. I reckon a good runner with decent bodywork - i.e. no lacquer peel, dents, scratches or major rust - will go for £2k pretty happily. Maybe a proper mint one will go for a little more, but I can't see them ever reaching unaffordable values like the old Escorts do.

I'm not sure I'd swap a sorted 205 GTI for a mk1 MX5 - both in terms of sheer fun and also from a mid-term value perspective.

I'm with Chris Harris on the MX5 - http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?f=23&t=1193431&nmt=REI'%3A+Chris+Harris+video%3A+the+MX-5

I've driven a few and they've really never done it for me whereas I get nearly as much buzz driving my 205 as I do the Caterham.

Just 'cos it's RWD doesn't automatically make it better.

In terms of value the 205 GTI has clearly started its upward climb, and this is going to keep going.

This is only going to increase as I think we'll see a big chunk of the less-well-maintained cars being scrapped over the next 3/4 years as the increasing list of unavailable parts takes its toll.

The MX5 values will continue to be a victim of such a high production volumes for a good while yet.

The above is the same with all cars recently, there's just not much spending money going around in this economy, which will effect the prices.

However these cars are being more and more noticed, no doubt due to the amount people see on the roads. I think the 205gti is at a turning point especially due to the wet summers (arctic melting-jet stream lowering nuisance) and age , where every year lower numbers of these cars are around due to the rot and economy. With this in mind, as well as the NFP parts means these cars are destined to go up in value, others holding their prices.

Used to see loads on the road, now barely see any. Everytime I take mine out it gets stares or people come and ask about it saying they are awesome.

Reckon its back to being worth what I paid for it back in 2001 if not more which is nice. And the more people do the above the better!

Bumping this thread as im after selling mine now.

Trouble is i have absolutely no idea what its worth?

Has a load of history up to 05 iirc,shell has done 150k,rebuilt engine on 280miles,8months mot and 4 months tax,89 F plate with a rebuilt 1.6 Engine,(new rings,bearings,head skim,gaskets,pump etc)

Bodywork is good,as is the interior. On standard wheels, lowered with a janspeed system.

Done 280miles on the rebuild,i just dont have the time for it.

Any rough ideas? Due to the substantial work i have done i dont want to sell it too cheap, but at the same time i dont wanna ask too much for it,and it be sat doing nothing!

This isnt a sly for sale ad btw,im just genuinely interested in its value,as they seem to be up and down on the bay,and in fairness,i have yet to see one in similar guise to mine thats had an engine rebuild for sale so have no idea really.

Probably not what you want to hear, but I'm not personally convinced that an engine rebuild adds much to the price of a car - it might make it a more appealing prospect for some (and equally, some might be put off) but I don't think that it'll increase the price by any notable margin over a similar example with a good original engine.

Certainly you won't even begin to get back a reasonable percentage of the rebuild cost.

To give you an idea, I bought my 205 Mi16 for less than the owner had paid to have the engine professionally rebuilt just 1500 miles prior.

Indeed, I suspect that the realistic worth of your car will make for depressive reading, as at least on paper it's the least desirable 205 out there being a Phase 1.5 1.6 GTi that's been modified and has highish mileage. Most people looking to pay good money are typically after either early (Phase 1) or late (Phase 2) cars, most want 1.9's rather than 1.6's, and completely standard unmolested cars are typically worth more and easier to sell.

Based on what you've said and the time of year, I'd guess £500-1000 for it. In other words, probably not worth selling.

Probably worth more in bits then? lol

I get what your saying about the engine rebuild, but surely a "fresh" engine has got to be worth more in a car than a 125k+ engine which has no history and smokes more than bob marley?

As above, a mate had a mint phase 1 on Ebay and it made only around £1400.00 I think, The engine build only helps the sale if done by a professional company, DIY builds do put allot of people off even thou they can be as good or even better than some pro's out there (Catch 22)

In parts at the moment 205's are worthless in my books, Too many people selling bit;s at 99p on ebay.

I was looking recently and was shocked at the price of the Mi16 conversions. last time I had owned one they were a large premium now it seems they are coming down and maybe even a detterant to buyers.

However this is normally a good sign as it shows that people are starting to look at them as genuine classics, like any classic you want a "original" car, you wouldn't want a MK1 Escort Mexico with a modern engine, it would be much better to drive and much quicker but worth nowhere near an original one.

I think the prices at the moment are a little confused, because some are being advertised at 7,8,9k then people are thinking the massive mileage rust buckets must be worth 3,4,5k when in reality they are still probably 500,1000.

Mileage shouldn't make a difference with a "classic" as it should all be about current condition, and history. However when there are so many to choose from people will be picky and then mileage comes in to play as a quick way to sort the many cars.

I have a 1.9 up on E-Bay classifieds at the moment and I have priced at what I think is the right money for the car in the current condition, however I am not expecting a quick sale as to get the right money you have to wait for the right buyer, this could be next spring/summer but until then I will enjoy driving it.
