Sti Auto Gearbox

i've seen that the 406 auto gearboxes are based on software, but on the sti it's based mechanically so the thing is does it ( the sti auto gearbox) depend on torque converter?? what i am meaning is that can it handle more toque for turbo upgrade?? like tct engine??
