Gearbox Ratios

Recommended Posts

brettoz

I assume as the diesel 405 runs at lower revs they run longer gear ratios or a longer differential.

Does anyone have gear/dif ratios for diesel gearboxes?

Are the gearboxes interchangable between diesel and Mi16?

I am looking for the highest top speed option.

Thanks,

Brett

I reckon and say Im using a diesel gearbox, it give shorter gear ratio than mi16 gearbox..

I could be wrong, but I think 5th gear of 0.757:1 is the longest BE3 option, which the Mi16 already has. The Mi16 has a 4:43:1 cwp whereas diesel is much longer at around 3.62:1, from memory. Happy to be corrected as I know zit about diesels!

I found spreadsheet that agrees with this.

Indicates a Mi16 with diesel cwp would give a maximum speed at 6500rpm of 257kph(160mph).

Peter, I assume changing the crown wheel requires disassembling the gearbox and changing the drive shaft/pinion could you confirm?

Thanks,

Brett

Diesel ratios aren't suited to this engine though. I guess that doesn't matter if you just want to be able to cruise at low revs on the highway but then you could argue maybe you'd be better off with a diesel car for that anyway.

Yes, you need to completely strip the gearbox to change the cwp. But as Kris said, why would you? Mi16 gearing is near perfect. Do you realise you won't go any faster? The rpm will just drop and take longer to get there. Unless of course you've got more hp than standard. Can you pull 7100 in 5th gear?

I have put 2 gearbox together, I used the 1st gear and 2nd gear of a diesel gearbox ( berlingo gearbox ) then revert back to mi16 3rd and 4th gear which are shorter than diesel 3 & 4 gear..am happy with it !

Found the web site below last week

dry lake racers australia

Need to cage to race so I won't be ready till next year

Only a six hour drive

I am going to put a cage in anyway.

So looking for gearbox options

3 mile wind up , 3 mile timed, 3 mile slow down.

Under 2l record is only 117mph

Hopefully oil surge won't be a problem in a straight line.

Fastest fwd ever was a CitroenSM @ 202 mph on Bonneville salt flats, but it was V6 turbo

- That seems quite low

I reckon 3 miles would be long enough to bounce it off the rev limiter in 5th.
