cammmy 1 Posted August 15, 2007 The front bumper on my 4bie is a bit wonky and is peeling, showing red paint underneath. I ring the previous owner asking why and he says "it was in a fender bender before I got it so I got a new bumper had it painted and put it on". F***K HEAD why was I not informed of this, you would think someone interested in buying the car would like to know if it's been in an accident or not, Jeeze. Any way, now I wish to get thew bumper off however i'm a little stuck. I think I have all the bolts off from underneath the bumper and in the wheel arches but there seems to be at least one more somewhere behind the number plate? How many bolts/nuts are there in total and where are they? Cheers
KRISKARRERA 2 1 Cars Posted August 15, 2007 Jer will know
Jer309GTi 3 Posted August 15, 2007 Jer will know <{POST_SNAPBACK}> lol -There are 2 bolts at the front of each wheel arch, 13mm head iirc. -There is one bolt in each side going through the bottom of the front wing and out into the bumper. -There are 3 (I think) Big torx bolts under the valance going up into the front crossmember. -Also you need to disconnect the fog light wires, and when the bumper is on the floor disconnect the headlamp washer hose. I don't remember there being any bolts in the centre of the bumper on either of my Mi's, but if it has been in a bump someone could have put one in there to help hold it on. Hope this helps! Feeble 0 Posted August 15, 2007 As far as I can remember... It's a right bugger!
KRISKARRERA 2 1 Cars Posted August 15, 2007 If it helps I can take a piccy of the one Jer "supplied" me lol. It's still on my drive you see. I've been touching it up and blackening it up but I've noticed there's that snapped bolt I'll need to drill out first.
Jer309GTi 3 Posted August 15, 2007 Which one was broken Kris, I can't remember? They're buggers, those side bolts. Both of them broke on my other bumper. All the crud and crap collects on the threads and corrodes them so no amount of wirebrushing and WD40 will help
Jer309GTi 3 Posted August 15, 2007 As far as I can remember... It's a right bugger! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Once you've done one its not that bad! The only real trouble is making sure the bolts come out undamages, but then it's not the end of the world if they do
KRISKARRERA 2 1 Cars Posted August 15, 2007 Which one was broken Kris, I can't remember? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> It's one of those side ones. It shouldn't be too much grief if I hacksaw off most of the bolt there'll then be alot less to drill through to get it out. It's just one of those things I put off. I fitted the backbox, then had to restitch some of my leathers, and then had to fit that xu10 starter motor and kind of thought "hmm I'm gonna have a break from messing about with this car for a while!" I get very impatient when jobs arent simple. I even looked at removing the metal section of the bumper in order to make the front end lighter but I think it's more hassle than it's worth. I wondered why there were two bolts on one side and no the other Will take a look at it now and let you guys know how it goes Thanks again
KRISKARRERA 2 1 Cars Posted August 15, 2007 Funnily enough, an online mate of mine, a chap called Lee Power, never succeeded in removing the front bumper from his 1995 405 Executive.
Feeble 0 Posted August 16, 2007 Well we had to get the bumper off of the donor and couldn't see what was holiding it on in the middle for sh*t! Ended up pulling it off, but even that was a nightmare!
KRISKARRERA 2 1 Cars Posted August 16, 2007 So what exactly was holding it on then?
Feeble 0 Posted August 16, 2007 No idea, we couldn't see... I'll have a look tonight and see if I notice anything!
cybernck 403 1 Cars Posted August 16, 2007 cammmy, perhaps you could take some pics when you start removing yours? it would be of help to next generations of Mi16 owners .
Mr Teflon 1 1 Cars Posted August 16, 2007 ^^^^ Yes please - I've bought a brand new one for mine and whilst I'm not concerned about damaging the old one while taking it off I do want to preserve the fixings and mounting points
cammmy 1 Posted August 17, 2007 Oh crap sorry already put it back on I'll take some pics of all the mounting bolts etc for you guys and put them up
cammmy 1 Posted August 17, 2007 Okay guys here goes This Pic i'm holding up some kind of cover thats bolted on behind the wheel. You have to remove this to the bolts holding the bumper on. This is when the cover has been removed. also the red arrow points to the nut. The green represents the mount where the bolt is attached. (if you cannot see the mount clearly you will be able to in the next pic). Here is the same mount as you will see from underneath the car. I may have made this overly confusing but I put in the diagram so you can orient yourself when under the car. Here are the last two nuts. These are easy to see, they are in the wheel arch at the front (behind the bumper). The same goes for both sides (just ignore the oreintation lines for the left side) There are two allen bolts underneath the front 'lip' of the bumper to the left and right. You will have to disconnect the foglights BEFORE you remove the bumper. Also the headlight washer hose, however I just left it connected and put the bumper on the ground in front of the car That's a;; I had to do Sorry if I made it too complicated, just ask if you want me to clarify. I might be able to get better pics but I will have to jack the car up Hope this helps Cam
