Tell us what that number is - I'll check it on the parts CD.

I think they're the same as Mi16 but the springs are heavier.

Strange that, I've checked the cd but it doesn't match any 405 shock absorber part numbers.

well as i was working on my Mi16x4 brakes i double checked the code number on the front shock (strut) i went and had a look at the ones on my GLx4 and they are exactly the same code number i quoted you stamped on the shock!......also of interest the girling disc brakes on the Glx4 are identical to the ones on my Mi16x4.

The dates that are stamped on the shocks for both cars do relate to each vehicles year of manufacture so all i can think of is that both cars are still on there original shocks. :)

I think if you check the parts CD, most 405's have the same shock.

so what you are saying is that Mi16's have the same shocks as say a GR 405?

Possibly. They're catergorised initially as "Except 4x4" or "4x4". Then they have a heavy duty suspension. Can you work it out?

I can see three part numbers in total:

5203 35

5203 36

5203 29

I've just taken a look at some shocks from a 405 Mi16 - not known if it was a 2wd or 4x4 because I bought them off of e-bay.

Anyway, they're the same part number as yours Scott. Looks like pug must have changed part numbers since then.

Cheers for that Kriss, i just wanted to check to make sure the ones on my cars are the right ones, cause you never know that previous owners could have replaced them with standard model ones :)

That's what I tried to point out. The part numbers for the x4 shocks and non x4 shocks are the same!

Umm no need for the tone Pete! i started this thread to find out if my shocks are genuine MI16 shocks, then throw in part number confusion!.....and still to this date no one has worked out why the numbers on my front shocks of both of my cars dont match the part numbers listed on your cd's! and kriss's shocks have the same part numbers as mine!....so i cant see what ya huffing about! anyway cheers for ya help

There's no huffing or bad tone in this corner. I find it comical that a 405GR most likely has the same shock an Mi16x4. Sorry if you interpretted it that way.

Anyway, I went out to the shed and found an Mi16 shock, from an '89 model I used to own. The number stamped near the top is M87 9608528380, the same as yours, along with the date of manufacture.

That's the troublw with communication via text, can't hear tone of voice or facial expression.

Perhaps the shocks are up to Mi16x4 standard but Peugeot just thought they'd keep things simple and use them on the entire 405 range. Even the lesser 405 models seem to handle well anyway.

Incidentally, is there any way of checking the condition of shocks while they are off car?

Thanks for clarifying that Pete!......... When checking over my Mi16x4 i noticed slight oil dampness around the left hand shock body :( which tells me i gotta start looking at replacing both front struts hence the actual reason for starting this thread to get the right info for ordering the correct ones. I suppose the shocks have done well for being 15 years old!!!!. Are original shocks still available?? cause thats what i really want to put back on the car cause it seems that after searching back through old threads it seems that no aftermarket performance shock out there is better than the original for street use. any input???

I think that a well fitted out shock shop has equipment to test off the car shocks......we have a place here in New Zealand that rebuilds shocks for our trucks so i spose that when they rebuild them they have to be tested in some way before they are returned! im sure there must be a place like that in the UK

Yeah we must do, though I was hoping there was a way I could test them myself like slotting a barbell plate over it and counting how long it takes to compress :D

In the UK we've got places like GSF and Euro Car Parts that sell standard shocks at a reasonable price, have you not got anything like that out there?

Ah well that seems to suggest mi16x4 shocks should be different to the rest.

I was asking just incase it became a deleted item like some Mi16 parts have become. Im still learning these things about Mi16's since i bought my cars over a year ago.......you know...the learn as you go.........thats why i find this particular site really awesome...we have pug parts specialists here and as for the hydraulics in the butt of my x4's i go to citroen who are way cheaper and also refered me to a particular guy who makes up bush and bearing kits for the rear suspensions for a cheaper price again!!...now how is that for service!!....but its good to know that genuine shocks are still available.....Thanks Kriss

LOL....geez Pete where you get all this stuff!!!!

Well that bit of info only adds weight to my original suspicions of different spring and shock set ups due to the extra weight of the car plus the different handling characteristics from the back of the car. I remember you stating to someone who wanted uprated springs for there 2wd Mi16 to use x4 springs as they were stiffer.

Is there any dampening specs for the shocks written down anywhere? cause im thinking about getting our shock shop to repair mine and they may need some specs.
