Oil Pump Wear?

Recommended Posts

Ryan

How much wear on the oil pump is normal?

The pump is from a 1989 Mi16 engine, and except for a 6-bar spring is otherwise standard - 22 tooth sprocket, 50 link chain, and 0.7mm shim - all original. Mileage on the pump is unknown, but I don't remember noticing anything wrong when I fitted the 6-bar spring 6 years ago, and it's covered <10k since then.

The ends of the teeth are noticeably worn, and feel sharp and rough at the corners and tips.

Inside the pump also has a wear mark, It still feels smooth, but there's a small lip that you can feel with a fingernail. There's no noticeable damage to the pump gears, and the clearance is still within spec.

I notice there's a tiny amount of adjustment in the pump position when bolting it to the engine. Could the damage be caused just by a slight misalignment?
