Stolen Cats! + Stupid News Papers

Recommended Posts

In my area a lot of people are having their catalic converters nicked by thieves for scrap value! Gold, palladium and rhodium are used in their manufacture and can fetch up to£200. This was reported in our once a week crap rag of a news paper. One local garage did a one day free engraving of the last three numbers or letters ot the registion on some. Then the paper went on and helpfully made a list of the most valueable converters which are, Citroen Xara, Piccasso,Belingo and C4. Also the Ford ranger and Thunderbird and the Peugeot 406 and Expert. This info will save would be cat burglers a lot of time, leave the crap and go for these

The police around here are fairly on the ball with this. I got stopped by the police for about 15 mins while I was replacing the DPF on my 406 HDi, as I was doing it at the side of the road one Friday evening with a couple of mates, they saw me wandering from the house carrying the filter housing, a handfull of tools and a can of kronenbourg :D. Was tedious having to prove the car was mine, and have all my details taken etc but I guess its good they are keeping an eye out for crimes like this.

Who's going to jack a car and grind away at the exhaust? A little too risky even for a tea leaf surely? I'd say that garage/engraving guy was just trying to stir trouble to get business in.

You are right in the paper listing all the most valuable though, that is pretty dumb.

When i saw the thread title i thought this was going to be a newspaper story about peoples pet cats being stolen  On that note i wish someone would steal my neighbours to stop it crapping in my front garden border

In answer to the OP's subject, thankfully there isn't much of a problem around my bit of Surrey. There was a few years back, but it was mainly happening on cars parked in dealer forecourts rather than on drives.

I know somebody who was so pissed off with their neighbours cat for crapping in their garden and flowers for years, he slung the cat in the boot of his car and drove a VERY long way up the country, and then released the cat...

He had no more cat crap issues after it went 'missing'...

we've replaced quite a few for insurance companies where i work. last one was on a shogun, over a grand for an oe exhaust and cat. tend to get a lot of 4x4's and vans as they're easier to get underneath. all have been from private driveways or streets.

some are isolated cases and one customer advised around half a dozen vehicles done in same area on one night.

every one i've seen done has been a very neat cut probably with something like a plumbers pipe slice.

People should man up and fit decats. It's the sensible thing to do.

There are proper tools for the job its a chain with little wheels in between the links witch act as little cutters you can have a cat off in minutes.

I've seen this happen at work, a few vans and a few 4x4's. Nice and high and easy to access - doesnt take long with a pipe cutter and is relatively quiet.. Not to mention plenty of drilled fuel tanks,

It's been going on up here for a while now, police have just started putting up signs warning about it though. It doesn't really matter if the papers say which cars have the most valuable cats, the people cutting them off are way ahead with this.

My 406 already had it removed when I bought it, there's a garage near me that buys diesel cars, mainly 406's, removes the cat, then sells the car on!

There was a courier company down my way that had all their vans hit over the weekend at the end of last year... Every van in the whole place had its cat cut out!! I work for a courier company, and can only imagine how much they must have made out of that!! I heard there were somewhere in the region of 45 vans in this place's yard...??

they are a pointless invention that was mandated by maggy because we own all the palladium mines...

lean burn technology would be far better, and work from cold start instead of only after the car is up to temperature.

that aside..

Doesn't lean burning produce a lot of NOx gases though?

I don't really see what this "awareness" is supposed to do for people, it's not like a cat / DPF / GPF is something you can remove from the vehicle overnight!

Tesco's vans I can cope with... Companies insurance and all...

But ambulances is wrong!!! How would they feel if their parents/children/loved ones needed the ambulance and couldn't have one as the cat had been stollen... I know the general consensus is that your average tea-leaf doesn't think... But it really doesn't take much thinking does it.....!!

Its not that thieves don't think, its they don't care. They don't care about the hardship and misery their thefts costs all they care about is their selves and not having to work for it !
