Painting A Helmet.

Recommended Posts

Couple of questions.

Am planning to use car paint. is this a problem?

Also what primer should i use first? it's a plastic helmet.

Should i use a high build primer for the very small nicks?

Should i clear coat the top with some kind of laquer?

Is there anywhere that sells a pack of sandpaper so i don't need to bulk buy the different grades?

Cheers

J

In short, don't.

The solvent in paint may damage the thermoplastic shell even though it may look ok. You only get 1 head.

Above i'm afraid, there's always been warnings about even applying stickers to lids!

Helmets need expensive specialised paints, its part of the protection they give.

Dropping helmets etc can mean they dont have the same protection as they did beforehand.

vinyl should be fine, but you have to be sure not to cover the certification stickers.

could ask these guys what they use

they are the daddies of custom helmets.

quick question though, when helmets are painted in the factory, what are they painted with?

I'd still be wary with Vinyl.

I appreciate the material is different, but hard hat manufacturers in particular don't warrant vinyl stickers applied to their products, so I'd be reluctant to use it on a helmet either.

Mind you, different quality vinyls have different adhesive makeup. So perhaps there is a type suitable.

Just leave it purple and give it a good polish

Body paint should be fine. Just be sure to propery clean the surface. Cheese will play merry hell with the finish
