Unhealty Sounds From Gearbox

Recommended Posts

Bovien

Hi all

My gearbox is makes sounds like you can hear on this recording:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10531966/Pug/205gearbox.mp3

It's recorded when the car was in neutral, just next to the box itself when I had the car on stands. It is rather loud, as it almost overcomes the sound from the engine, when lying under there..

Am I right in assuming something is up? I don't feel anything wrong with the gearbox at all though...

Input shaft bearing. It has oil in it right?

Oh no I was not saying clutch release bearing, I was saying input bearing.

As there seems to be 2 different opinions, can anyone actually confirm whether this is the release bearing or the input shaft bearing?

Classic peugeot gearbox roll over noise.

Now I'm even more confused...what the hell does 'roll over' mean?!

Perhaps its an aust/usa term  ? Roll over noise refers to the noise of the gearbox turning "rolling" over in neutral. The audio file to me sounds recorded right up against the gearbox. If you could hear this say 10 feet away I would be worried. Regardless, your input shaft bearing is probably past its prime, but it "shouldn't' spectacularly fail. Unless this is a MA box?

MA box?

It was recorded just next to the box, yes. But the sound is rather loud down there.. But again, nothing 'feels' wrong

Gti's use BE box's

MA box's are found on the TU engines (1.1 and 1.4L)

Ah, right.. Engine is a XU9J2, so it must be a BE box

at this point it really is down to you, its pure speculation till you take it apart, unless it stops working in some way.....

There's a inspection hatch on the bell housing to check the release bearing.

It sounds like the input shaft bearing to me also, I had this on an old 309 SRi & that was the cause.

How does the noise change with the clutch pedal pressed / released?

Thanks mates!

Haven't had a chance to put it on stands yet, but will do soon. I can't hear the noise without being down there (I'm glad to find...)

Usually if its a dead input shaft bearing or clutch relase bearing you will hear it from the drivers seat or stood outside the car, certainly you shouldn't have to have your ear right next to the gearbox to hear it imo.

Ok. It is probably all good then. I can't hear it over the engine, and I have also been told by very pug knowledgeable builders that the box itself just is noisy. I was just startled of the very very rough sound it gave of. Almost like half of the teeths was mixing around down there...
