2k will buy you a very nice ph1 172, just saying ;)

It won't be in the same league as a played with 16v 205 though, neither will an EP3 & certainly not a Scoob for what he wants.

Afternoon,

Clio Williams 1 with the numbered plaque on the dashboard. No other choice necessary.

That is my thoughts :)

Chris

Clio Williams 1 with the numbered plaque on the dashboard.

For a collector maybe... But for some weekend fun I'd go with the mk2 over the mk1... More of them about and exactly the same!!

Or a Williams 2/3 without the plaque and thus often, without the premium.

Unless there's something I'm overlooking, I can't personally see why you would buy a Williams 1 over a 2/3 unless it's an investment given that the later cars are all but identical, are younger, cheaper, and potentially more choice.

£2-3k gives a huge choice of cars away from French tin though.

306 rallye..... after owning a d turbo and an xs I can only image them to be a bit of a beast with some minor adjustments.... as for rot boxes between me and 2 friends we've had 6 of them and mine is the only one to have a bit of rot on that was easy to patch up.

Would personally go for a Williams out of the list. Drove one, and owned a 172/306 GTI-6, and the Williams was the most fun whe still being comfortable.

The other cars were modified and the Williams was standard, but still better.

I've had a 182(with cup packs)and they are awesome little cars. You go and read any test in Evo magazine and they will say the same.

The steering wheel is a bit too big but you get used to it and they have a good spec(climate,A/C,cruise control etc).

Got a ep3 type r now and they are very closely matched i'd say, civic has better engine and the best gearbox I've ever used in a road car.

...or a 99/00' impreza. whoooshhh

After driving a GTi... I don't think so, he'd be bored silly (especially if it's a uk spec one).

Been there, done that...205 gets the big grin factor every time (every time I'm not driving the Escort that is :D )

If it were me, I'd just get another stock GTi for fun around the lanes... keep the track one for just that.. the track :)

I have a 306 GTi6 and a 172 Cup currently.

The 172 is the better car, by a long shot actually. I use my Cup as a daily, and it's great. Returns briliant MPG compared to a 306, is much more fun to throw around yet at higher speeds, the 306 does feel more refined.

The 306's feel lardy. RE the comment from someone about the 172 feeling underpowered, I really don't agree. If I was honest, it almost feels 'About right'. It's a 2.0 in a fairly light car, especially by todays standards. It's a 2002, AFAIK was the last model allowed to be built without ABS as standard. I would almost go as far as saying for the age of it, it's one the last vehicles in the price bracket that gives good feedback. Parts are cheap, they are cheap to buy and only being around 10 years old the compenents are generally in better condition.

From my experience of 306s, they are getting on a bit and to find a good one is going to demand a slight premium (although they can be bought for sub £500 all day long) and at the higher end of the scale for the good ones, your talking 172 cup money.

I wouldn't buy a 172, it has to be the Cup. I also wouldn't pay the extra for the 182.

The 172 Cup is the one to go for if you are going to look at 172s. More benefits, but less luxuries.

The 306 rallye is a poverty spec 306 with GTi6 extras and some stickers. At least with the Cup variant of the 172 they did more than put a poor interior in, they retained electric windows, mirrors etc yet added nicer wheels, reduced the weight by a decent amount and actually made it feel like a different car to drive.

And funnily enough, when I get into my ph1 Xsara VTS, I always think it's a hoot. The turn in is brilliant. An essential mod for 306's.
