Xu 16V Hydraulic Lifter Identification And Interchangeability

Recommended Posts

Anthony

I'm sure that this must have been asked before, but I'll be damned if I can find the answer.

From what I can work out from Servicebox, XU 16v heads were fitted with a few different hydraulic lifters over the years - 1.9 and 2.0 Mi16 (XU9J4 and XU10J4) share the same one type, the regular 1.8 16v and 2.0 16v (XU7JP4 and XU10J4R) share another type, and GTi-6's (XU10J4RS) run another type again.

  • What is the difference between these three types of lifter?
  • How do you tell them apart if they're already removed from the head?
  • Are the different types interchangeable at all - for example, can you run GTi-6 lifters in a Mi16 head?

For bonus points, guess which plonker has several sets of lifters bagged up, removed from several different XU 16v engines over the years, and didn't label them up as to which set goes with which....:rolleyes:

I didn't realise the R lifter was different to the RS lifter. You can certainly run either in earlier heads. They're quite useful, as they have a longer preload distance, meaning you can run wilder reground cams with smaller base circles.

I can measure some known mi16/s16 lifters and gti-6 ones if you need me to.
