Gearbox Oil In Bellhousing?

Recommended Posts

pugpete1108

im having a bit of a mare with keeping the gearbox oil actually in my gearbox?

ive got brand new shaft seals but it still leaking from the short side so im removing it to check.

whilst im there i noticed oil leaking from where the bellhousing meets the block? i thought it was engine oil but it smells like gearbox oil.

the box is coming off anyway but could do with a heads up on it? imput shaft seal gone? i assume replacable?

its a pita as the box was fine in my other shell with the old seals too. (thought i would replace seeing as the shafts were out)

It's not a massive amount so fingers crossed its not the latter

I'll find out soon enough, best to get a genuine one then? If it is the seal

dont think you can get them elsewhere, they're parts of the sleeve that the clutch release bearing slides on, bolted down with 3 bolts.

well it seems its not the input shaft seal at all as the bellhousing is dry as a bell.

looks like its the crank seal as the oil is coming from behind the flywheel.

still an easy job now the box is removed.

did however manage to drop the bonnet down on my head, and bit my teeth together grrrrr

If you want a seal, I have a Corteco Elring one (Basically OEM) boxed. I bought it and then found it was the dizzy seal and the crank seal was fine.

£5 Collected from London SE3. or £7 delivered...

there's always oil on the end of the flywheel bolts as its not a blind hole, you wont lose any oil.

is the oil coming from the end of the crank by the seal, or down the sides of the main bearing cap?

p.s, that's not gearbox oil ;):P

Pete is the oil leak at the back of the block flange ? As mine is leaking there. Let us know what you find as I'm sure that's what's gone on mine.

yeah it did confuse me a little as it smelt like g/box oil  but the bellhousing was dry as a bone. i think the oil leaking from the small d/shaft seal must have got down there somehow giving it the smell.

anyway there is no oil anywhere other than pictured, the main part of it is around the seal.if its leaking from the bearing cap its low down where it meets the sump.

if the cap seals have gone is there anyway the oil could get in the water from there?or is it just an external seal? could explain a few things if so.

Could well be the hockey sticks that are leaking then ? Quite common on xu engines.
