Headgasket Gone Or Not?

Recommended Posts

i'm on my phone so havent searched this but....

my engine was supposidly rebuilt by the previous owner in december and there is now mayonaise building up around the breather pipes and the oil filler hole.

Now i have been told that this sometimes happens when a fresh build has been done but should i be worried? hasn't used any oil or water.

anyone help?

This time of year it can happen due to the cold weather/condensation.

So it may look like a h/g but its not.

every 205 gti i have owned has had a small amount of mayo in the oil filler cap and in the gauze filter inside ( sometimes this is removed apparently its a flame trap ) and its usually due to condensation and hot oil but not necessarily a clue to the condition of the head gasket.

i normally remove the cap from the pipes and clean it completely and remove as much as i can from the necks of the pipes and re assemble then check again later.

after reassembling i have nearly always found engine oil but no mayo but am guessing if mayo was present again that it could point to headgasket?

A drive alone won't get rid of it imo, you need to clean the breathers out to remove it & then see if it comes back after a decent long drive.

TBH though, the difference between normal mayo build up & a head gasket failure is very noticabley different.
