Exhaust Manifolds

Are there any differences between manifolds for the two piece and three piece exhaust systems ? What year did they start fitting the strengthened manifolds ? I'm looking to fit a two piece system on a 1989 1.6 gti.

"Downpipe looks like it is for a phase 2 exhaust manifold." Copied this from Jorgs for sale ad. Could someone please explain the differences in manifolds as i'm looking to buy a two piece system from dealers and want to make sure it will fit, as they won't take returns on specially ordered in parts !

The exhaust manifold is exactly the same fitment throughout the years on all XU 8v engines.

 

All that differed was the casting and different strengthening/bracing they tried.

 

2 or 3 piece system, or a CAT downpipe for that matter, will fit any age of manifold fine.
