Recommended Posts

Are all 1.6 and 1.9 gti starter motors the same? If not which will fit my 1991 1.9 gti?

Cheers

Yes they are, but I would recommend fitting a later slimline style starter motor off a 306, 406 etc as they seemingly far more reliable, turn the engine over stronger, and are a fair bit smaller to boot. Plenty in scrap yards or not a huge amount of money new if you look around - the slimline ones are usually Valeo.

No point starting a new thread for my question...

These slim-line starters; can someone post a pic of one? How 'slimline' is slimline?!

Pug list "class 3", "class 4", "class 5" starters (the latter only for diesels) - are these power ratings? If so does anyone know what's what in terms of kW?

Mine is from a 406 diesel, and says 1100W on the sticker. I think the petrol ones are somewhere around 900W.

most tend to be 1.1 or 1.4 KW, diesels will be geared down, petrol direct drive.

Some Mitsubishi starters are slimmer than the valeo units, but only remember seeing them on a diesel, not that it makes much difference, they are significantly smaller in diameter than the older 205 8v and most 1.9 16v engines.

havent got a pic of the smaller bodied unit to hand, only this one of the old ones.

Well ive just swapped a 1.6 engine for a 1.9 and on the conversion thread the guy says you need a 1.9 starter motor and a back box. So i got a starter which was a duff one and put the 1.6 one on and it fitted no problem cant figure about the back box i just put old exhaust back and its fine.might be worth updating that thread

Which guide is that?

1.6 and 1.9 starters are identical, and the backbox depends on the age of the car not the engine size.
