1977 Peugeot 104 Sl General Restoration.

Hi all,

I'm back with a new project!

I have gone halves with my brother on a rusty 1977 104 SL 1.1! It was a cheap buy and should be a good little project for us both.

The aim is to get it back on the road in standard form and just drive it! It might turn out to be quite a big task though as it has not been on the road in about 10 years!

We collected it from South Wales yesterday, it was getting dark by the time we were on the way home but we did still have a bit of a fiddle when we got home to not much avail!

I'm not sure how well 10 year old fuel is likely to fire up but we couldn't get it started after changing the plugs, cleaning the distributor contacts (checked and had a strong spark) and cranking long enough for the mechanical fuel pump to get some fuel through to the carb. We moved onto the electrics, neither of the headlights worked but we have managed to get the O/S one working on both settings but having an odd problem with the N/S one, there is 12v to the plug but a working bulb does not light up so we will have to try cleaning the contact or replacing the socket. There was ice forming on the ground at this point so we decided to call it a day.

This morning while I was at work my brother went and got 10L of petrol and a can of easy start. Put the fuel in the tank, a little squirt of easy start and it fired up straight away! It seems to run pretty well, we didn't run it for too long though as the exhaust has mostly rusted away so it was a tad on the noisy side!

The current plan:

Try and get most or all of the electrics working (not much works currently) and run the engine up to temp then get the car down to Bristol to a welding place we have used before and see what the damage really is!

Jobs to do in the near future:

Get the battery charged, and run it up to temp after replacing any service items not already replaced.

Fit all the new parts that came with the car. This includes: water pump, oil filter, air filter, clutch, brakes, master cylinder.

Replace exhaust and perished fuel filler pipe.

Tackle the electrics! As said, not much is working currently so will need a full overhaul!

Parts needed:

Full exhaust system, there seem to be a few sellers on ebay selling these so shouldn't be too hard to source.

Fuel filler pipe, not sure where to start with this, 104's aren't listed on servicebox so don't think Peugeot will be much help. Any suggestions where to try?

I will add some more pictures later in the week when I get a chance to take some in the daylight. I am pretty busy with work though so don't always have a huge amount of time!

Nice buy, must be Emyrs old one. What diameter is the filler pipe, we sell it at work

Yes I bought it from Emyr, although I collected it from Meirion!

Not sure on the diameter, I will try and remove it in one piece and measure it up, it's very perished though so might not want to come out in one piece! Do you just sell lengths of fuel pipe, or can you supply a pipe bent in the correct shape?

It can't hurt to ask. My local dealer has a microfiche reader behind the parts desk for older cars. No idea what models they have slides for, but probably 104/305/505 that sort or era.

It's just that reinforced rubber pipe but it's stamped as fuel filler hose to keep the MOT man happy. We can also supply Samco Fluro lined hose if you're looking for something a bit more flexible and fancy looking

This is how it stands at the moment, haven't yet fixed the N/S headlight!

Some of the rust, the sills don't seem to bad.

The rear arches have some rust too! It seems to be lots of little patches of rust, there aren't any big patches that I can see.

A quick shot of the awesome orange interior!

I found out that the inside is soaked, I am guessing it leaks quite badly from somewhere near the front, windscreen perhaps. I have removed some of the interior and put an electric radiator in the car to help dry it out a bit, hopefully then I will be able to see where the leak is coming from.

I have managed to source a new fuel filler pipe, fingers crossed that should be getting here before Christmas.

Anyone got any info on paint codes? This one is '1405VA' which I think might be Mandarin orange but not sure.

I think that is all for now :)

Made a little bit of progress with the fuel filler pipe, although equally had a setback as well!

I got in touch with Dean Hunter @ Peugeot parts specialist and he had a replacement fuel filler hose in stock, although it was quite pricey at £40 delivered I thought I would get it anyway as at least i knew it would fit properly.

The only problem now is that on removing the old filler pipe we discovered that the metal neck part at the top of the pipe is mostly rusted away.

Queue another phone call to dean and he has a new one of those in stock too, but it's another £45 quid so we are going to try and modify a ph2 plastic filler pipe (that came in the boot of the car) to fit as the neck at the top is the same size and fitment, we will just need to cut off the pipe as it is all one piece.

That's all for now!

It was sunny here today so that meant I got some motivation to get something done on the 104 as I've not really touched it over the winter.

I thought removing the rubber floor lining (can't really call it a carpet) would be a 2 minute job, but it turned out to be a bit of a strange one. I think a previous owner must have thought the car was noisy, in some parts there were 5 layers of carpet and sound deadening stuff, all of which were soaked through of course. Anyway, I got most of it out only leaving a little bit which is stuck firm with some tar like substance, I did my best to keep it in one piece so I can use the shape as a template when it comes to putting some new stuff back in.

I got the grinder out and started sanding back some of the rust patches, just to get an idea of what I'm working with. It was all more or less as expected, some is fairly serious, some less so.

I also uncovered a patch of rust that I hadn't spotted before under the drivers seat :o

Sorry about the pictures, I took them in the dark!

Hi all,

Sorry been offlibe for a while, got rather a lot on my plate at the moment, I still have this 104 as someone very kindly offered to store it for me. I will crack on with it as soon as I can.

Yes Chipstick I would love another one for spares although I am lacking any storage space at the moment!

Not sure it will ever be mint, but I aim to get it roadworthy which will be hilarious seeing it driving around!
