Gti6 Conversion

Hi, i'm in the middle of the conversion and i have some doubt's...

I have a 1.6 BE1 gearbox and a Xsara VTS gearbox. I prefer the VTS ratios (becouse of the "overdrive" 5th gear) but the VTS box seems to be bigger and (most important) heavier! Beside that, how difficult is to change to Be3 type (i'm using VTS clutch)?

My second question is the sump. Once again, de Xu5 sump seems so much lighter, Beside the baffle/door (that could be added to de Xu5 sump) and the obvious extra gearbox mounts is there any more differences? About the gearbox mounts, if i choose to use the VTS gearbox do i have to use the VTS sump?

Thanks in advance.

i dont think the xu5 sump will fit as the stroke is longer on the xu10? could be wrong

the vts box will fit along with the vts clutch but you will need to change the linkages to suit.

best bet is the get an mi16 push clutch with the vts box, change the clutch arm on the box and off you go

XU5 sump will fit fine, it'll be identical to the XU10J4 sump less the baffle.

what do you mean with the clutch arrangement?

transmission mounting you just use the 205 one, including the stud.

My worries are with the "reverse" and the vts box fixing without the XU10 sump.

ahh I see, the easiest way to make the clutch work is to use a BX 16v clutch, and a standard BE3 PUSH type clutch arm and a standard BE3 205 clutch cable.

the VTS gearbox will work fine on the engine with a steel sump (my steel sump is from an XU10, the RFY mi16/S16/zx16v engine) that is how my ZX 16v is :D

But i don't have any BE3 Push type clutch arm (i asume is different from the BE1 type) and this "sportier" Peugeot/citroen aren't very easy to find in a scrap yard.

you'll find them on lots of naturally aspirated diesels, 1.8 16v petrol engines, plenty of them out there.

The VTS pull type clutch isn't difficult to get working on a 205 though, and clearly he's already got the parts. Works nicely too with a light smooth pedal.

well there you go :) , would you need the spacer for that or is it a deep enough without?

would be too deep with the spacer, you wont get the spacer to fit on the bottom an XU10J4RS (and most later XU10J4's) anyway as they have a windage tray.

which cable would you need Anthony? any mods required to it?

I think a standard late ZX cable would do the trick actually as it's the same fitting as a be3 at the pedal end and only 10mm longer, as long as you can get the non-auto adjust one.

How about the reverse? Will it work just fine?

I removed the Xsara Cluch Cable, will it work directly in the 205?

There's only two depths of sump fitted to XU series engines.

1.9 GTi and 1.9 GTI CAT (XU9JA/Z) and 1.9 Mi16 and Mi16 CAT (XU9J4/Z) have a stiffening (spacer) plate and a shallower sump.

All other engines - 1.6's, 1.8's and 2.0's have no stiffening plate and a deeper sump - the sump being the same depth as the spacer and shallow sump combined.

If you use the spacer, you use the shallower sump, and if you don't use the spacer, you use the deeper sump.

The only exception to that is with Petert's extended oil pump pickup, which uses the spacer and the deeper sump.

I've only personally done it once and that was a while ago, so don't take this as gospel, but you just use the original 205 cable and adjust the fittings on the end to suit the reversed clutch setup. Quite a few people on here have done it so hopefully someone will confirm the specifics, but certainly I can't understand why people are so hung up on using an Mi clutch and faffing around swapping the clutch arm/fork over (which is inevitably a pain on push clutch arms)

ZX one might work if it's that close in length to a 205 one.

I removed the Xsara Cluch Cable, will it work directly in the 205?

I've never personally tried, but I'd guess that it would not work - no need anyway when you can use the 205 cable (and I'd prefer that anyway, as then you can adjust it manually rather than relying on the failure prone auto-adjuster that's built into later clutch cables like VTS's)
