you can get it running in a matter of minutes if the ecu is unlocked, a while longer to tidy everything up and get the gauges working.

the minimum required is a switched live to switch the engine management relay, an earth, connect the fuel pump wire from the relay, and give the relay its permanent live feed which comes from the alternator.

spin over the starter and it'll fire up, exactly the same principle as any other engine management conversion, i.e 1.9 MI16, 2.0 MI16/S16, V6, 106 gti etc.

there is a lot of information on the forum as to how to sort it, though a tad tricky to pin down as the search function will not accept short keywords, so you need to use google.

Everything you need in terms of a Phase 1 wiring diagram is in the Haynes manual.

Point to note is that Phase 1 wiring differs fairly considerably to the later Phase 1.5 / 2 cars, and as such much of what you'll find on here will not be applicable to your car - it doesn't for example have the two brown plugs under the drivers side dashboard where all the wiring goes back to.

The wiring on Phase 1 cars all goes along the passenger side inner wing and to the fusebox (or around it) and thus in some ways it is even more simple as it doesn't need re-routing like the later cars. The sensor wiring should be self explainatory, the ignition live and rev counter wiring is near the coil / ignition amp, and the fuel pump wire from memory goes to the black box that had the relay in.

Plenty of info on here regarding the 306 GTi-6 / Xsara VTS wiring side of things (the two looms differ slightly)
