306 Heater Blowing Hot And Cold

Recommended Posts

dodsworth_gti

hey again, another problem with my 306 and cant find or post the problem on the 306 forum so im hoping you guys can help

some times i can jump in my 306,and it warms up lovely and quick

twice now it has taken ages to blow warm air into the cabin

for a example it took our lass 25 mins to do a 5 min trip due to the heater blowing cold and making the screen worse

any idea why this would be happening???

many thanks

ben

air lock in the cooling system possibly, or a faulty motor on the air flap in the heater box.

does the engine warm up quickly ok?

Airlock as the welsh wizzard said? Have you tried bleeding it? You need a bottle on top of the coolant ressy to make the water level higher than the heater hose bleed screw. If its not been done right that may cause it?

rarely need to do that tbh with the gti6 engine, just open up the bleed screws then close them in turn as the coolant flows out.

one very tiny mod I have found that does help is to drill a 3mm hole in the thermostat on its top edge, this wont affect the rate of cooling at all but will help a lot in getting all the air cleared.

actually read this in the peugeot+citroen sport build manual :)

Mark is spot on. The 306 is sensitive to bleeding the heater as there is no header tank at the top of the system. 2 litre pop bottle with the bottom cut off in the rad neck will work a treat, fill the pop bottle 2/3 of the way up with coolant, then bleed from the points on the bulkhead for the heater.

As the heater is one of the highest things, it is the first thing to collect air, stop circulating, and hence the blower goes cold, when the water level in the system drops.

Years ago I was about as far from home as it was possible to get (Eastbourne!) in November in my old 306DT, and driving along the heater started to blow cold. Pulled over and found the top rad hose leaking, luckily I was able to cut it back and resecure it, and top up with water.

I had the same problems with my 6, even though i used a header tank. I found that it needed a good bleed till all the air came out the system, more than usual.
