Where To Find And A Buy A 205?

Recommended Posts

joey21

I am sure this topic is covered somewhere and I doubt this is the relevant section so please forgive my ignorance!

I am testing the water for a 1.6 gti with the idea of buying one in the new year, haven't seen many for sale to be fair, about five on ebay at one time and very few on autotrader/pistonheads, are there any classifieds that are worth a look?

Secondly I have read a few articles on the 205 and notice the rear beam problem is very popular as well as a lumpy idle, is there anything else perhaps more common amongst the 1.6 in terms of problems?

Many thanks

spend around 1500 on one and you'll find less problems than a 500 quid banger..

their can be loads of problems with 205s if not looked after

For sale section here and Pistonheads? Occasionally they pop up on Car and Classic as well. £1k+ and you should get a half decent 1.6 usually. They don't command the same premium as a standard 1.9.

Cheers guys, well I'm going to be getting rid of my polo so I think I will put around £1500 towards the 205 as I want it as a daily!(Lucky I don't live too far from work). Any problems 1.6's are prone to? Except for being put through a hedge once or twice in their lives!

Same as any other GTi.

1.6's have rear drums, harder to service but work. Cloth seats will be worn. Front brakes if original may 'clonk' upon pressing the brake pedal when reversing.

That book looks worth a good shout. I have seen some very poor cloth interiors on a 1.6 which I suppose gives a good idea of the cars usage, although I would be tempted to swap out for a more luxurious half leather interior. Thanks guys

£1500 will get you one in reasonable condition that only needs minor attention, less than a grand will require a lot of work. To get a pefect one you're looking at over £2k nowadays, I'll be advertising my mint Miami for £2250-2500 as it also has a heated windscreen. ^_^
