Anthony 1,003 Posted September 26, 2003 Quick question - is a shaking/bouncing speedo needle caused by a knackered speedo cable? Assuming it is, is it the longer of the two cables from GSF that you need, and can you change it without having to remove the top of the dash and the instrument cluster? Robbie G 4 Posted September 26, 2003 Yes, replacing the speedo cable will sort it out. Yes, you need the longer cable. No, you can't change it without removing the top part of the dash and the instrument cluster, but it's pretty easy, honest.
Guest simonb Posted September 26, 2003 Erm, changing the cable doesn't always fix it. I replaced mine and it was fine for about 2 weeks before it started bouncing again. It must be the nylon gear in the driveshaft housing that is worn then.
Guest craigynett Posted September 26, 2003 I've had 4 Pugs now & every 1 of them has done this It's a pretty straight forward job to sort out;) Craig

C_W 3 1 Cars Posted September 26, 2003 The speedo cables dry out after a relatively short time and start juddering. It is possible to replaced it by only removing the lower tray and shining light through the steering column but you have to hope the old one pulls off ok and you can find where the new one fits onto the back of the speedo. Anthony 1,003 Posted September 26, 2003 I've had 4 Pugs now & every 1 of them has done this It's a pretty straight forward job to sort out;) Yeah, my last one did this too, just not quite as badly - the last one stopped bouncing at around 40mph and was stable above that, whereas this one is still bouncing away quite happily at 70mph+... I'll give it a go changing it C_W's way, but if I do have to remove the top part of the dash, does anyone care to save me some time and let me know where the various screws I have to undo are hidden? Guest Andy Mack Posted September 26, 2003 the reason it judders is because its right hand drive. Peugeot didnt take into consideration where the dash and speedo cable were going to go. So in RHD cars the speedo cable is near all the heat of the engine and it melts the grease in it. Changing the cable will fit it, but only until the grease then re-melts from the new cable. Dont bother, just live with it.
