Planning A Rebuild 1600 Gti-Blown Head Gasket Etc

Recommended Posts

Sinbad

Evening all,i bought my 205 gti with a blown engine, opened it up and all wasnt right, some thunderhead has previously worked on it and INTERNAL bits were missing!

Anyway, bought an engine yesterday with a blown headgasket that i plan to rebuild.

So again, whipped the head off today and again-someone has faffed around....

Heres what i found in both engines lol

On my engine originally in the 205-liner 1 has fell into the sump, the rod and piston have vanished?! The other 3 pistons say DIST pointing to cambelt on 2 of them and to the distributer (as it should be??) on the other one.

The new engine has Dist arrows ALL pointing to the cambelt?????!!!!!!

Am i right in thinking that they all should point to the cambelt?

Also how much am i looking at for bearings, rings and gasket kit for the engine??

Any things to look out for??

Any help or advice is always appreciated

yup, the arrows should all be pointing to the cambelt end.

bearings etc you'll just have to shop around.

As said , the "dist" mark and arrow on the piston crown must be installed pointing towards the timing belt , not a ignition distributor ..

The "dist" is a French short for engine distribution timing/toothed belt ... unnecessarily confusing stuff must admit ! just as reversed cylinder marking (No1 near flywheel ..) and some other stuff ..

Download and have a read of Hyanes manual .. it's good for beginnings and specifically HG job explanation ..

Local car part store ... don't buy from Peugeot cos it'll be same stuff repacked in Peugeot boxes and double the price ..

Just look for brands like :

Glyco , AE (bearing shells ..)

Goetze , Mahle , Perfect Circle (piston rings ..)

Ruville , Hepu .. (water pump ..)

SKF , Febi , INA .. (tensioners for timing belt ..)

Gates , Continental , Dayco .. (tming belt ..)

Purflux , Mann (filters ..)

NGK (spark plugs ..)

Bosch , Beru (ignition parts ..)

Victor Reinz , Payen , Elring , Corteco , Mellior ... (gaskets and head bolt sets , separate gasket sets , seals ...)

Loctite , Permatex (sealing compounds ..)

dont totally discount peugeot though, I got some XU10J4R big end bearings last year for £25,they would have been £35+ elsewhere.

Thanks very much for the replies,my local motor factors uses most those listed so i'll try them.

And peugeot is just down the road so i'll call in there aswell beforehand.

Sorry if these questions seem a bit silly, its just almost all my experience has been with Vauxhalls, mainly nova's so im still learning things every time i log into this site.I could strip and rebuild Nova's with my eyes closed and know exactly where to go and what to buy for them!!
