With some locking wheel nuts you can hammer a tight fitting socket (18mm?) onto it and then undo that, it knackers the socket tho.

Your local AA centre will be able to get them off.And they will do it for a couple of beer tokens. :)

you could also use an angle grinder to cut a hexagan around the outside, if you can get it in there. The easiest way is to hammer a slightly smaller socket on, as said above, Ive removed wheel lockbolts this way

that looks like a mcguard wheelnut. does he have the code that came with them?

you can get a new key ordered from the code.

Be careful, I lost my locking wheelnut key last week and me and my Dad tried to force a socket over the lock nut with no success.

I eventually got a replacement key but I've now discovered that the thread on the hub is knackered, and everytime I put a wheel nut in there, it de-threads the nut.

It looks like I've got to try and get the hub re-threaded.

Does anyone know how to go about this?

You can either drill it out and use a thread insert (helicoiling its called). Or you can try and re tap the thread. If i were you i'd take it to a garage and get it helicoiled, as unless you have access to a set of taps you'll end up paying out for them.

Thanks Doc!

Any idea how much it'll cost?

I seriously, seriously wouldn't even think about reparing a knackered hub thread with a Helicoil for anyone (unless I really hated them). Helicoils just aren't ideal for the regular assembly/dissembly with wheel bolts and one day it may fail. Either get a solid sleeve threaded into the hub by a machine shop, or have the hole welded up professionally and re machined - or else fit a new hub. If you've ever seen someone lose a wheel on the motorway then you'll know that it's an experience to avoid!

I lost the locking key for my alloys a few months ago whilst working on the car outside my house. I thought it'd be best to put another set on incase some scrote found the key for the 1st set;)

Well the problem now is that i wrote my motor off the other weekend:(. I've come to an agreement with my insurance that i can go & strip any bits i want before they scrap it:) I'm basically wanting to get the engine, gearbox, suspension, brakes, interior etc!! Not a problem, until i remember i've lost the key for my locking nuts :)

Aid came in the way of SKY TV!! Spotted a multi purpose socket on there called Gator Grip. It's made of laods of individaul pins in a large socket that will take any bolt off:) They cost about £15 each individually so i ordered 12 :D & saved a couple of ££:) i'll be selling them to anybody that needs 1;)

Should be here any day now, well, hopefully cos i'm supposed to be going to strip my CRX on Saturday:s

BTW, i've now got a J reg 205 1.9GTi in Miami blue!! i hate it already

i'd thought of those but was told by a few ppl it wouldn't work as the size of the actual socket would be too big to fit in the hole on the wheel to grip on the locking wheel nut, because its universal and has to be able to grip any bolt its a bit bigger than the normal socket you'd use for ur wheels, this is only an assumption though, i may be completely wrong!

Let us know how it comes along, if it works okay i may well have one off you, depends how much the aa will do it for....

Hi

ok, no probs m8y :) i'll try 1 on my Pugs alloys to see if it'll fit in the bolt hole :)

Hopefully it will work otherwise i'm gonna be f*cked for getting my brakes & suspension off of my crashed CRX  I'll lose sh*t loads of cash if i can't get em off. 2 of the alloys are knackered anyways so it doesn't matter if i knock the crap out of em. It's the 2 good alloys i'm worried about cos i got a buyer lined up for them, infact the same lad is buying my NSX front calipers, discs & pads:)

Someone mentioned before as an idea. To make removing the locking wheel bolts easier, tighten up the other 2/3 normal bolts, this should release some of the pressure off the locking one, making it much easier to release.

if you weld a socket onto the bolt this will work.

Or a even better way would be to drill a hole through the center of the bolt. Tap a 14mm left hand thread, get a bolt to fit, and then while tightening the bolt on the outside you would also be un-doing the wheel bolt :)

Or you could cut a slit with a cold chisel and the 'unscrew' it or weld a cold chisel or bolt to the end enabling you to get a socket on the end to undo the lock nut.

Before I got hold of a replacement key for mine, I rang the RAC and when the bloke got to me, I asked him if he could get my wheels off as I've lost the key. He then basically said, he couldn't remove it, and even if he could he wouldn't!

He was an absolute arse!

Arsey jobsworth RAC cnut :)

I'm with Beastie - helicoils aren't the way forward, even if you could find one with the right thread (very fine IIRC).

your best and cheapest bet is probably replacing the hub itself. Or try a gator-grip on it. I bet they sell well to wheel thieves though ... hmmm

I was getting my hub re-tapped the other night and the tap snapped off in my hub which has meant I've got to get the hub replaced now anyway!

You can tell the winter's coming, the Pug gets more and more problems!

Managed to get my locking wheel nuts off last night using a hammer + punch. Positioned the punch tip in the key-holes in the nut and hammered it undone. After about a 1/4 turn they were loose enough to get them off the rest of the way with a set of pliers. 30 seconds a wheel, easy job! (that's after a few hours pissing around with drills and extractors, then drilling out broken extractors -grrrr :) )
