[body_work] The Quest For A Red 205 Gti.

Recommended Posts

Evening all. Thought id throw a few pictures up of my latest 205, as its been stealing all my spare time and evenings for the last couple of weeks/months.

Basically, as a small boy, my older brother brought himself a cherry red, 1990, H plate 205 Gti. And i thought it was the dogs doo daas. At the time, the car was only 18 months old or so, and it was spotless. I vividly remember him spending the entirety of each and every sunday polishing its nooks and crannys, and this ultimately was one of the reasons why i always wanted a 205 Gti of my own.

Fast forward, and iv had bloody loads of them, in most varieties, im lucky to say, but a cherry red car had always eluded me.

Anyhow, just after christmas, i came across this example.

100k miles from new, one lady owner. The car had blown its headgasket in 2009, was taken to a Peugeot 'specialist' who fitted a rebuilt 1900cc engine, and then wired it up. Badly. Im not sure how they got it so wrong, but you know things are bad when the looms routed over the manifold, with one of the fuel injector plugs connected to the SAD valve

At this point the car stayed with the 'specialist' for 18 months, until the owner lost all hope of driving her again, and sold it.

So, without further adew, the car as it arrived at my workshop:

Cleaned up, she doesnt look so bad. But the drivers side door and rear quarter had faded very badly to orange, the drivers door had been bent a little from a theft attempt, and the car generally had the usual pin dents and scratches all over.

At this point ill say that this is one of the best 205 shells iv seen in many years. Theres not a spec of rust anywhere, on the front panel, inner wings or underneath. And the previous lady owner clearly treated her wheel, the wheels are immaculate (under the grime). So, i felt compelled to try and return her to some sort of former glory!

So on with mending the parking dents  a grim job on any Peugeot :(

Cue a lot more sanding, various coats of primers, more sanding, more primer, more sanding, more primer etc etc

Then the fun bit:

And so.... At this point, i then had the valances, bonnet fuel cap etc to paint.

I then treated all of the bodykit to return it to its original black. Refitted said bodykit with clips and bumper fixings (some of which took 3 weeks to arrive from Peugeot :( ) And inbetween i had the job of building the engine back up, (as i hadnt even heard it run at this point).

Next installment coming soon!

Cheers

Matt

Sadly, my phone died around 2 weeks ago and went into carphone warehouse for repair. Phone came back yesterday to me with the memory, and with it all my 'mid project' photos deleted!

As a result i think we will have to rapidly fast forward to a few pics of the car all back in one piece.

Its been a good few weeks since she was painted, so since these were taken i gave it a good few coats of wax, and my sister volunteered her photography services with a swish SLR. So ill add the SLR pics up as soon as she e-mails them over to me!

Sorry about the lack of pics, blame Smart Phones!

Cheers

Matt

THat looks absolutely lush  I'm not usually a fan of 14" pepperpots, but they really work when they are on a mint condition 205.

Takes me back to my first 205 GTi I had when I was 18/19. D797 DDU was a mint 1986 1.6 in red, 39K when I bought it. Wish I still had it....
