Time To Sell, Decision To Make

Recommended Posts

I need some forum help.

I have owned my 205 for about 5 years and the time has come to sell up. I bought it when i was 18 and thought modifying was the way to go (how i regret that now).

Anyway i half heartedly tried to sell a few months ago, put no effort into photos or the (over priced) ad, secretly hoping it wouldn't sell and i would get it back on the road. I have a new car now and am fed up of seeing the 205 on the drive not being driven so unfortunatly i need to let it go.

So mechanically the car is pretty good with loads of new parts that usually need replacing on a car of this age. The mileage is pretty low too but i think the "bodykit" isn't going to help me sell.

The question is what can i really expect to get for the car as its is? Is it worth spending money, getting new arches/bumpers/valances to sell as a standard car against the money it will actually make.

I need some input from you guys, it's a lovely car and i want it to go to a good home but the amount of money/time i have put into it i can't let it go for peanuts.

Here is a link to the old ad. click me

Thakns for reaing.

I would say you really need to take all the crap and tat off of it, original parts are not that expensive from here. Def take the sub out and the cannon hanging out the back off! People are massively put off by things like big exhausts and body kits - not to mention the back box won't actually be doing anything. For little spending you will reep it when you sell it for sure. If its had lots of new bits, get it MOT'd and it will sell for loads more. Theres a good car under there some where

I remember seeing that first time round and thinking how the hell does someone hope to sell a car with all the arches missing! You may struggle to get Phase 2 GTI bumpers and arches at a sensible price from eBay to return it to the original standard. However it is a low mileage one which is a plus. The 3 bar grille would look better than the "Gutmann" style one. The front valance looks ok but is missing the fogs. The sub does it no favours as it makes it look thrashed. Can the exhaust me made smaller - is it just a trim? The hardest part to deal with would be the skirts.

It all depends how much time you have and what parts you can pick up cheaply as whether it is cost effective to do an unmodify.

Personally what I'd do is get a set of side mouldings and the red strips and fit them. Also a standard grille and spot lights. I wouldn't worry too much about the exhaust and valances as they're not that bad tbh. I think that'd look like quite a sensible car then. :)

If you want an exhaust and a grille I have both spare. Grille is grey though and missing one little lug thing. :) if you wanted to go as far as a bonnet I'll swap my grey one for yours!

Just to add, I've also got a dark grey parcel shelf. ;)

I would have thought if you have service history to back up the mileage and the car was standard, you should be able to get somewhere near your original asking price......

More fool me for not putting it together as a standard car (try telling me that when i was 18). The exhaust is a pain because it is part of a full magnex system, not an easilly replaceable back box.

As i said the advert was to keep her indoors happy, placing the advert showed i was making an effort to sell. The hardest bit as you say will be the skirts, there is no other rust on the car but it does worry me.

I think you have hit the nail on the head with it being cost effective. I think i need to activly start searching for good parts and tot up how much its all going to cost me. Mechanically the car is great but the outside lets it down.

Indeed, hopefully if i start buying parts some lovely members won't be after too much money for them! :D

I've got a standard ph2 exhaust. It's in fair condition. Took it off my car recently as I fitted a full magnex system including the manifold. You'll have to do something with the rear valance if you do put a standard exhaust on by the looks of things though..
