Advice Needed On What To Do With My Gti

Recommended Posts

stevem099

Hi all,

im stuggling with what to do with my 1.9 gti

i brought it around a year ago and it seemed on first inspection quite tidy, i used it everyday for about 5 months, i messed up changing cambelt (as a plant mechanic i hang my head in shame) as i needed the car head was pulled off vavles changed back togeather, used for another month or so then got a little corsa and since then shes been parked up in my parents garden..its tatty at best, oil pressure is crap and has quite bad idleing issues, also needs a clutch, panels arnt the straghest and seats are ripped. also needs lots of silly tidying up bits (gearknob and few bits of standard airbox etx)

i did love this car but now my rents are on my back and i really could do with the money..

do i look for decent second hand engine try and tart it up and sell?

sell as is?

or brake?

in hindsight i prob payed abit over the odds for it £1000 n recently ive seen alot better examples sell for not much more.

your input would be great cheers

steve

sounds like you have lost intrest if you break it from what you say there isnt much good on it so maybe 300 pounds plus all the hassel of stripping and all the mess.if you want to sort it you are talking a lot of time and a fair bit of money,so i think your best bet is to sell it complete.

I see a lot of gtis advertised and they look great on the web but close up they are absolute dogs and even the best examples need work doing somewhere. when i get fed up of my 205 spending out on it i tuck it away for a bit until i get some enthusiasm again. I always think if i didnt keep one id be wasting my money on some other car or hobby.

its not so much that ive lost intrest, the cars in kent, i live in wiltshire and currently just about scrap through every month money wise lol.

in an ideal world id like to tidy her nice rebuilt engine rebuilt beam, etc. suppose i could just wait and see if a decent engine comes up and the parts i need buy all the bits first, whats a engine rebuild cost? seals gaskets etc and also did i read the 1.6 pistons in a 1.9 up the compression?

cheers maybe just need to get some enthusiam lol

If you can stomach the idea of lost money, then I think you need to cut your losses now and get shot of it. You've stated that funds are an issue, and considering it sounds like it needs quite a bit of work I wouldn't bother thinking about trying to fix it up. The more you spend, the more emotionally tied you become to it, until one day you start to resent keeping it (ooops, I'm thinking of my 205 ;):P ).

Just punt it on as it is, as a little project for someone else.

Unless you've got somewhere that you can store it for free until such a time as your money situation improves and you can sort it out. Problem with that is, it could end up sitting neglected for years. Out of sight, out of mind etc.

Is it usable as a daily hack. I don't see many gti's round this was but when I do, even if it's a rough one, it always stands out a mile from the usual mundane barges! I've just saved one from a scrap man, Miami blue, 198k and tatty, but it's gonna be kit's and used.

Whatever you decide, it's prob worth more in bits, but try and save it.

If I was in your position I would sell it on, get some funds in and return to the fold later with a better example, primed with all your new found knowledge of 205 GTIs.

Its either spend now, keep it, potentially become skint, sell it and lose more money.

Or

Spend nothing now, keep it, it deteriorates and you have to spend even more to bring it up to scratch.

Or

Sell it on as above.

No brainer for me. Get it polished up, hoovered out, and on ebay. :)

As people have said maybe best to sell the car on

I am sure there are people out there looking for cheap fixer uppers and project cars which yours sounds like.

And once you have the funds and cash back on your side look at getting another one :)
