Cost Of Shot Blasting 14" Alloy

I need a winter project and have bought a set of 14" pepper pots to refurb for my 1.6.

My local shot blasting place has quoted me £25 + VAT per wheel.

Is that a fair price or a bit steamy, I was expecting the cost to be lower.

I called around for a set of 5 a while ago and had from £15 per wheel up to about £40. Just go through the phonebook or online directory and get calling!

 

In the end I spend £4 on sand paper and lost have my fingers in the process - worked well though.

Just for a price comparison, I had a set of 205 rallye steels blasted and re-painted last week, all in it was £130, which was £50 to blast them and £20 to paint each wheel. I thought that was a pretty good price.

 

I sandblasted the speedlines for my 1.9 gti up at my Dad's, as he has an industrial clemco sandblaster then i primed and flatted them about 4 times to get them relatively flat again for him to paint them for me.

 

The conclusion is, I'd rather pay to get them done than ever sand wheels again as its a grim job!

Thanks chaps, I had two set of 15" speedlines powder coated last year for £40 a wheel all in, so I was expecting less than the £29 odd.

It sounds a but wierd but I may do it all by hand, I'm in no rush.

Having used a drum sander to do my rally car wheels, it took ages and i would not think twice about paying that!

I know someone who can blast and powdercoat a set of 4 for £100.

I pay £100 for shot blast, acid etch primer and then powder coated with any size wheels. Quality job too

Im lucky. My mates work has an blast tank so I get everything done for nowt.

Sounds a bit high to me. I spoke to a local company last week and was quoted £10 per wheel. The guy said that it can be a little aggressive if you plan to paint as it can leave pitting. If you powder coat is covers the imperfections. He said it's better really to acid dip and powder coat then paint.

Acid dip, now that's an idea.

I appreciate that there will always be cases of special rates but I just really wanted to understand normal prices.

Well I never spoke to this company before so it was a standard price of £10 per wheel. £29 is too high, I can't see it taking more than 1 hour to do a set of 4 wheels max. They re-use the media although it does go blunt. Shop around and I'm sure you can do better.

 

I have refurbed wheels on my car so the plan was to get a scabby cheap set blasted and then paint them black myself so I have an alternative. Got the urge for black wheels for some reason.

HS what is so outrages about the price? £10 per wheel is reasonable for blasting its not like they are hand sanding each wheel is it.

The place I use charge £6 a wheel and I don't know them so aren't doing me any favours. But it's cash in hand and uses sand not blast media and as said it does leave pitting, I must have put at least 10 coats of high fill primer on to level it all out, but the end result was pro standard.

that seems a little steep, you should be able to get all four done for around £20 if you find the right place

im in the process of getting my 1.9 gti wheels done by "The Wheel Specialists" in hampshire and as log as you dont want special colours (pearlecent/flip paint) then it costs 35 quid each and from the wheels ive seen done by them they should look absolutely spanking.
