To Break Or Not To Break?

Recommended Posts

I have sitting in my backyard a non-sunny phase 2 sorrento 1.6. I originally intended to rob a few bits from it to make a good 1.9 sorrento i recently acquired and then break it. Currently its covered in cobwebs and sheeted over. The shell looks in good condition, i've not had an in depth look, but at a glance appears relatively rust free. The paintwork is tired and is keyed all around. The interior is phase 1.5 half leather so is not the original, and is pretty tatty. At present it has a 1.9 mi fitted which i have never run due to going to australia shortly after fitting it and not really being arsed to wire it in, i have decided not to keep the engine in the shell as it needs to be in a better looking car imo. The engine will be sold, although there is no loom it has inlet and exhaust manifolds, new clutch, solid rear mount, ecu, icv, etc, it's currently coupled to a good 1.6 box which will also be sold separately.

Now, my question is, do i sell the engine and gearbox, keep the front and rear bumper,(which is what i need) and sell whats left as a whole, or break the whole thing? I think i could probably get more money in the long run breaking it and selling parts gradually but being short on cash i need money quickly and it makes more sense to me to sell as whole. I suppose what i'm asking is really, How quickly could i sell parts? If i was to break it i wouldn't ask silly money for parts but wouldn't be giving them away.

Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated guys.

Breaking cars is grief and hassle. Yes you will end up with more cash, but after months and months of f***ing about posting weird and wonderful parts all over the place and waiting in for people to turn up and collect. Then get left with a big pile of stuff that doesn't sell and eventually has to be taken to the tip.

For these reasons I personally would rather sell it as a rolling shell for less money, but much less hassle, mess and grief over months of my time.

How long is a piece of string? Priced right, most parts would sell fairly quickly so long as there's demand for it.

Selling complete is usually the easier solution as Tom says, but I'd question what market there is for an incomplete non-running car with tatty bodywork. Tidy and incomplete will sell, as will tatty and complete/running, but tatty and incomplete/non-runner could well take time to shift as it's a fairly niche market that it would appeal to.

Perhaps in my favour then ;)

Agree about breaking, i think it will be a pain in the arse. Although if there is interest then i may well do it.

glad you made it home!

I broke a Miami blue GTI and it was a hassle, took a while to sell stuff however the parts that were left I either kept (they've since come in handy) or threw away.

The big items such as beam, wheels and interior sold quite quickly and thats where you make most of the cash I think, however small trim parts were a pain to go, remove, package and post but it had to be done. If you say get 'orders' a few weeks before then do it over one weekend then its OK. Then advertise the shell on eBay at a cheap figure it will go (mine sold for £75). But storing a half eaten shell isn't easy and it looks awful, you just wish someone would take the damn thing away.

So I suppose its down to if you have the time to break it, or if you can accept the low figure for the rolling shell.

Yeah, made it home ok. Had the rear wheels off after welding an m16 nut to the locks, took the brake calipers off and the pads (what was left of them) fell apart in my hands. Ordered new discs and pads now. Will tackle the front brakes, bumpers and foot pedals tomorrow.

Agree with the beam, wheels etc.. May have to take orders for the smaller parts like you say. Will wait and see though.

I took around 4 months for me to sell the majority of the parts from my old right-off......I ended up chucking the subframe and still have a fair few interior oddities.

Too may people doing it really to make any money from it hense I never bother, Just scrap the lot when they come up.

You just need to see ebay and 99p parts, not worth taking them off for that.

OK, bit of an update on this if anyones interested. After taking on board the comments above, i have decided to do the following:

The shell will be sold as a rolling shell minus dash, seats and carpet. I've had a good look around it and it does seem solid with very little, if any rust.

The seats are now out and will be cleaned and i think they will scrub up well. The drivers seat is pretty worn but the others arent bad at all really.

The dash is very good condition and doesn't look tired at all.

Carpet is ok and will be washed.

The MI engine and 1.6 box will be taken out at some point next week .

As far as fiddly bits of trim are concerned i just can't be arsed with it so will all be left in/on the car. All items will be listed in For sale as and when they're taken out/cleaned etc..
