This is not really the place to ask this question i know, but there are lots of knoleageable people on this forum with who have owned/do own cars other than 205s.

I have had my 205 Gti for about 6/7 years now, and really enjoy it, though i do have a hankering for something RWD now! (Dont try to convince me to make the 205 RWD, as im not intrested in such a huge project!)

My 205 has a Gti6 on carbs, pretty much every bush uprated, roll cage, buckets, adjustable suspension with 309 running gear, very good brakes etc etc and, i think, handles very well.

I want my next car to be RWD, have a 'cult' following, like the 205 has, and handle as well as my 205 (or better!). I also dont want anything heavy, like a skyline, or much bigger than a 309ish size.

I probably wont have much more than a total of 2.5k to spend, including making the car 'track day proof'.

I have been thinking Corolla AE86, but they seem to have incoured a 'classic Escort tax' and cost a lot. I always liked the idea of an E30 B.M.W,, but my friend (jer309) has one and id like something differant.

Maybe a bit obvious, but some sort of Caterfield Lotus 7 replica?

Some others come to mind but not for 2.5k, I think (Porsche 968? 944 if not?)

Old Sierra, maybe not a Cosworth but what about an XR4i/4x4?

Otherwise various flavours of BMW 3-series...

E30s are cult cars, but general consensus is they are over-rated. I had an E30 318is and the honeymoon month was great, after that it was slow and flawed. £2.5k doesn't get you much either, a cleanish 325i or a decent 318is perhaps, but most of the rot is hidden.

 

Leftfield option is a Porsche 924/44/68 but you genuinely get what you pay for with them and you'd end up in a snotter 924 for that money.

 

For a bit more that your budget, you could end up with a crossflow engined Westy, with 130-150bhp and obviously will go well too. The downside is obviously the lack of weather protection, even the wet weather gear is pretty s*it. Have seen some corkers for £4-5k, with lots of decent bits on.

 

I personally think you're budget is at least half of what it needs to be to get anything track day proof.

There are normally a few for sale on the OC, a friend has one and going round Llandow in it was the most fun I've had in a car plus the noise is great.

 

Although I doubt 2.5k will get one

I agree, cossies are either non exsistant or a total s*itter for that money, though i did see a Rover 3.5 powered sierra, with 4 barrel carb, cage etc for 2kish! But i feel a sierra mat be a bit big? It may just be a mental thing? , i was talking to someone who had an XR4X4 as a track day car, and now has a 205, and he did say the sierra was very competitant, though i would only concider a RWD Sierra, do these handle well? I guess they would?

I like the idea of a Westie etc, but the lack of roof is a but of a bumber, and if Mazda made a proper tin top MX5, you wouldnt see me on this forum! Im scared of convertable cars, its not natural! Now i have shot all your ideas down, anybody got any more?! What were the old ish square Nissan Sylvia turbos like, were these RWD?

Subaru? and take the front shafts out .You can get them cheap ,hell of a car for the money (untill they go wrong) or and early evo and take the shafts out again plus these are fairly bomb proof and future proof .As there near enough the same engines through out them plus the tuning bits from the states are peanuts.

 

 

Allso maybe an old merc 190 e or similar pretty hard to find a decent manual one though but defo worth a look

I wouldnt mind a scooby, though i feel they are still a bit 'chav'. Is it really just question or removing the front shafts/transfer box etc? Could be fun, although a bit backwards?

I have always liked the 109Es, and could be fun i agree! Prob go for the track meets gangster look!

Just saw your email about the orange one, looks fun Vauxhall Carlton GSi I thought of, but they are pretty big and heavy, or maybe a nice Triumph 2500?

It is in your head! Sierra's aren't that large, admittedly the only time i've driven our XR4x4 in the last 5 or so years was a few feet across the farmyard, but a friend has one too as a field car, not that powerful but torquey enough to be fun toys! Not sure they'd be that amazing on track as standard though.

 

190E's are underpowered, even 2.3/2.5 Cos's.

 

A friend that runs a RR/Tuning Centre has alot of MX5's in & has done a fair few turbo & supercharged conversions now and can't rate them highly enough, been out in a couple and i like! Even Kyepan's standard (power) one is loads of fun!

I found on a track day last saturday that on a 100ishMPH very open left hander with all the runoff you could dream of, no matter what i done in the 205, i couldnt really get the ass out as well as a decent powered RWD could. Am i turning hairdresser and liking MX5s?!

How about an S2000? Anybody know anything about the handling on these?

I think s2000 is way out of the budget though mate .I would say an old v8 jag stripped out but to big for you again.And ive drove a xr4 seira and it was crap to slow allthough id imagine if it was stripped bare it would be ok

wont get an EVO like Baz pointed out, similar to the E30's they do rust, quite a lot sometimes.

 

and if they're not they're often much more than 2.5k, especially if in fair condition mechanically as well.
