Gti Down The Scrappers

Recommended Posts

allye

Went down the scrap yard today (gristies in Devizes) for a few small bits and the guy showed me a rather mint 1.6 GTI part from the damaged nearside wing, the reason it is there I would believe. They are a breakers so will take parts of for me, is the sub frame the same as a 1.9 GTI? Will be having the rear beam as well. This is all in preperation for the GTI6 conversion happening very soon, a couple of other questions I have that I can't find answers to;

-fueling, will I need a GTI fuel tank or can I use an inline fuel pump for the GTI6 engine?

-gearbox, I know most go for the VTS box on a Mi16 clutch, but I fancy the 6 speed, I have read the loss in steering isn't actually that bad?

-What radiator and gear linkages do i need for the conversion?

Thanks a lot

Yep the subframes are identical.

You can do either, I imagine an inline pump will be much less of a faff, although you'll have to wire it in somehow.

The 6 speed 'box is brilliant if you can handle the reduced lock. Personally I never found it that bad, although it's worse now I have 7" wheels it certainly isn't undriveable.

I think most people use the GTI radiator, I'm not sure what the 1.4 rad looks like. You use the normal linkage on either box, but with the 6 speed you'll have to swap the lever arms on the gearbox over to GTI ones.

bearing in mind you will need to run wires for the fuel pump anyway so it may be a idea to just get the gti tank.

you will ned to run new fuel lines anyway so the tank will need to be taken out and back in anyways!

you will need xu gearlinkages as they are diffrent from the tu linkages.

you will need the gti radiator yours will be a tad small. probly easyer to have the complete gti cooling system pipes etc.

Hello Allye,

Don't suppose the 1.6 at Grist Group had decent front seats in did it?
