Quick Mot Question

COuldn't find the answer to this on the VOSA website.

If I take my car in for an MOT early, and it then fails, I'm obviously allowed to take it away and return for a retest within 14 days I believe (unless the rules have changed in recent years). If I cannot return for the retest within the specified period, does this mean that my car ceases to be MOT covered, or would the current MOT certificate continue until it's existing expiry date?

The old MOT is valid until the expiry date.

But if the test reveals that the car is unroadworthy, it should be used on the road.

It would show up on the database as having failed an mot test so the police would automatically know that the car was unroadworthy, also you can't even plead ignorance.

I could be wrong but I was under the impression that the more recent mot supersedes the old one so you would not have one.

When my brake pipe burst during the brake test on my MOT (zx) I asked my tester if I could continue to drive it on the old MOT untill I got back to the test station, I was told yes even though it had failed on a dangerous fault. If he was wrong then I'm so very glad during the 200 miles I drove until I got it back there that I didn't get pulled! :s

EDIT: I should add I replaced the brake pipe later that evening! I'm not likely to try and drive it that far without brakes! It was bad enough driving it back from the test centre with only the handbrake!

Well, nobody's quoted an official verdict on this, but I'll go with the general consensus that the MOT becomes void once failed, which is exactly as I suspected. Obviously you are allowed to drive the vehicle away to complete the failure points, but from what I read when I googled this, it appears that you can only drive it to a pre-arranged destination to have the work carried out (the same rule as when driving an un-MOT'd, or untaxed vehicle to a pre-arranged MOT), but again, that's not official VOSA advice as far as I can tell.

I was going to call my usual place and see if they would do a pre-MOT check, but I've just realised my MOT is not due until early Oct (thought it was mid Sep) so I won't bother now. Bad timing with me moving up to Edinburgh, but now I know it's MOT'd until Oct I should have enough time to give it a once over once we've settled in to our new home.

With Sept not being that far away, I'd be tempted to use your usual place and either test it on the first day you can so that you get a 13 month ticket or surrender a few weeks.

With the stress of moving, the last thing you want to be doing is finding a trustworthy garage/tester.
