A Bit Of An Odd One

Recommended Posts

OK, so I've got the car running again. It runs fine, well appears like it does, rev's smoothly etc. The engine is an MI16.

the problem that I seem to have is a bit odd, and probably a simple thing. I'll try to explain as best I can.

The car has a cut out wired in. most things are fed directly off this, the fuel pump is hardwired from a push button switch to turn it on. (ie turns off with engine but has to be pressed again to start it going and wont stop until power is cut) other than the starter which is off the key. things like the windows need the key at stage 2 to work also. when I turn the cut out on theres a weird buzzing style noise and a few clicky relay style noises, the buzzing ISN'T anything shorting, I belive that it may be injector noise of firing in quick succsession, but why? the IACV clicks too sometimes. If theres any questions then ask away, I realise that what with the slightly odd wiring there will probably be a few, but I will do my upmost to answer asap.

Regards

Tim

Could it be the switch arcing as it breaks the circuit? Does it vary depending how much is on at the time?

its not the switch arcing, and it happens once the switch is in the 'on' position. and if that ever were to happen then I have fuse protection etc. on pretty much everycomponent in the car. I'll try and find the culprit later today/this evening and let you all know how it goes.

edit: it doesnt matter how much I have on as to the noises I get. and if it were arching I'd expect that to happen when I turn the switch 'off' with alot on.

What engine management are you using, 8V or 16V? Does it buzz for a second or does it do it continuously?

16V management from a BX. it does it continuously.

If it does it continuously i would of thought you could trace the noise. There arnt many componants that make a noise, only ones i can think of are injectors, idle control valve and relays.

it isnt the ICV this clicks once when powered up and thats it, it occasionaly goes on/off a few times but not for long. Its much too fast to be a relay on its own, thats what's making me think of injectors. I'll have a play later on today and try to trace the noise.

Sounds like the problem I have.

If I turn the ignition to 2nd stage and don't start the engine I get clicking from the following places;

1, Injectors

2, ICV

3, Both relays in the black box (Fuel pump and ECU?)

It has done this for the 4 or 5 years the engine has been fitted, sometimes it goes away for a few weeks and then it comes back for a while again. Never managed to find the cause of the problem. Changed every part possible and swapped relays etc. I even removed the loom I made and had one made by 205parts to see if it was wiring issues and it made no difference.

However, I asked on here a while ago (for a 2nd time as no one could help with it a few years ago) and someone replied they had the same problem, replaced the ECU and it cured it. I didn't swap my ECU originally as I had it tested and it came back ok. I'm hoping to test mine at some point but I don't really want to buy a new ECU to test it in case it turns out not to be the problem.

To be honest I have just got used to not turning the ignition to stage 2 until I am ready to start the car.

right I have found the cause. Its the coil pack buzzing merrily away. so it tuens out that somthing IS shorting but within a component.

also achieved last night: new O/S rear quater window from an XS (correct tint) fitted. fan cowling cut back so that the radiator isnt almost touching the inlet on the engine.

Tonights job looks like its just going to be checking that the radiator has been re-fitted correctly and neither bottom nor top hose leaks. once this is done then its time to tidy up the 'mess' of wiring by popping it in some cable trunking stuff and then seats and MOT time.

Right, well hopefully the rad is now sealed. The only jobs that I have left now are tidying the cables and then bolting down a couple of bucket seats. and popping the harnesses in.

I've been playing with the Pug a fair bit recently and I'd quite like to move the rad a bit further from the inlet. I've partly cut down the fan cowling (sp) which has helped slightly. I did however see some pics on this site of a cut down cowling which had moved the Rad a fair way from the engine, I've done a fair bit of hunting/searching but have had no luck finding these pictures again yet, does anyone have any pictures? or any other ideas? I've thought about lots of things like lowering the rad but then the risk of stones going through it gets alot higher, and having had stones go through every set of driving lights I've had I don't feel like risking it!
