never heard of coolex :(

edit, are they called advanced radiators now? if so they're very expensive! £30 more than GSF!!

They are something like radiator specialists on ebay but a google search for coolex finds them. they are 20mins down the road from me in Nottingham and have a good reputation around here.

it must be someone else you're thinking of, unless GSF sell there's for £10! :) (they are about £40)

i don't get so worried about the temperature now but the fan stays on over-run for a long time and is killing my battery i think so i worry it won't start the next time i get in it!

.Any car set-up right will not have cooling issues sat in traffic.

This is true for the 205 GTI but not true for older cars in general. If you make that statement then I know for a fact that you have never driven a standard series 1 E Type through central London :)

For example why is an Mi16 engine any different from an 1.6 or 1.9 GTI engine. Almost identical blocks; similar capacities; same size and many of the parts are interchangeable. Why would one really run hotter than another?

That's not logic. As it happens, experience tells you that one wouldn't run hotter than another - but there's plenty of reasons why that might not be the case: Of course the block is very similar so its coolant capacity and the behaviour of the water passages will be very similar too. But what about the cylinder head, the combustion chamber design, the valve timing, valve lift and compression ratio? All these can have a very big effect on the amount of heat produced by combustion. If one had no prior knowledge of the Mi16 engine it would be safe to assume that in orginal installations it didn't run significantly hotter than the XU engine but it would not be intelligent to assume that it produced the same amount of heat energy (which it almost certainly doesn't exactly).

I'm not entirely sure what your point is.

We're on a 205 GTI forum, and most of the engine choices should all run within a very small range of typical operating temperatures. It's not a physics lesson in heat exhange and thermo-dynamics.

You just having a dig at me?

As for the topic in general: if certain people are happy that either their engine runs hot or their dials over-read or both, then good luck to them.

I am talking IN GENERAL, and as Welshpug also said his temps are in the region I'm talking about, and likewise his fan hardly comes on.

Any car, in London and stuck in traffic, will have to work harder to stay cool. But it should still cope providing it wasn't designed badly, has a fault or has been badly installed in the first place.

No - I'm not having a dig at you - I know that we are on a 205 forum which was why I prefaced my first comment with agreement about 205s in general and ended it with a :)

What I see on this thread is advice to the OP on his overheating issue. It seems to me that you introduced thermodynamics when you posted "why would one run hotter than another" in a context incidentally which suggested to me a rhetorical question. And in real terms what you seem to be saying doesn't make any logical sense therefore I took issue with it in the interest of correctness.

Your statements which I originally quoted and your reply to my post suggest to me that perhaps you don't have a very deep level of understanding on engine cooling in general although I'm sure that you have more specific empirical learning about Mi16 conversions than I will ever have. The cooling system of a car will always obey the laws of thermodynamics. I'm interested in understanding that, if you are not then I have no problem with that.

I have disagreed with some of the things which you have posted. That doesn't mean it's a personal attack. If you wish to correct my technical knowlege or indeed correct what I have inferred from your posts then I'd be very happy. You are most welcome to disagree with what I have posted and we might both learn more. But please let's keep the personal aspect out of a technical discussion!

Cheers
