I have had this in the past where a knackered air flow meter was massively overfuelling the engine, turning the oil into watery stuff full of fuel, meaning the engine was then pushing this water mix past the rings and smoking.

First job was to cure the overfuelling, then after one change with cheapo oil, and a second with decent stuff, and that sorted it. Engine carried on to do another 15k miles and was still pulling like a train when I removed it.

So don't write off your engine just yet!

Possibly yes, although it may not be the air flow meter in your case. But you do need to find and cure whatever is causing the overfuelling, as otherwise any engine whether the one you have or a new one will suffer the same.

I had exactly the same experience as Tom when I first bought my 205 (the very next day as it happens)

Indeed once the AFM was replaced with a remanufactured unit, the Coolant temperature sender was replaced with a new one from Peugeot (I didn't know that GSF supplied the same ones for less at the time) and the engine given a thorough service it was just fine, and went on to produce 123 bhp on a RR a few thousand miles later, which isnt bad for a home setup Jetronic system.

a few thousand miles later the same engine produced voer 130 bhp on the same RR with a different management system.

I got my AFM from a place called ATP electronics, I don't know of any other source for a remanufactured Bosch original unit, it cost me £150 a few years ago.

the blue engine coolant temperature sender as mentioned you can get from GSF, its an original Bosch part but listed for a BMW.

I also had a similar issue. It had an aftermarket fuel pressure regulator (waste of time on a STD engine) causing it to overfuel.
