hi all,

decided to finally try and get my 1.9 gti back on the road after 9 years of sitting in a garage idle!

just seeking some advice on what i should be doing first to get back on road is it just a case of a good sevice, oil , plugs, leads , and filters ?

all advice is most welcome

heres where i am now, oil and filter, spark plugs,ht leads, fuel filter, coolant flush looks like i need some new hoses soon, and new battery and ementbefore i start her fuel injecter additive,

on turning the key for the first time in 7 years i am full of excitement, but i am dissapointed as it wont turn over, i can hear the fuel pump running but no starter turning over, and hissing coming from just below 1st injector,

e

i will try to push her out of garage tomorrow and see if it will bump start,

it also has a cliffard immobaliser with a small key ,anyone know if this has to be reset, as this may be stopping the car from turning over,

thxs all

Have you tried turning the engine over by hand?

I wouldnt be bump starting an engine that hasnt turned in 7 years! As above, turn the engine through a few revolutions by hand first at the very least, they try and get to the bottom of why it won't turn over on the starter!

I would of took the spark plugs out dropped a little oil down the bores then turned it over by hand

There could be rust on the cylinder walls (alothough unlikley) its not work taking the risk

a bit to busy today to get anything done, but after reading posts i think i will take spark plugs out and see if it will turn over by hand, i take it i turn it by hand where the cam belt is?

also my wife has informed me that i used to have to wigglle the little brown box by the battery when it wouldnt start before, funny how she remembers something like that but always forgets to make me a pack up! i think theres a litle connecter box with about 7 wires in it has this got anything todo with the starter motor? it looks very corroded!

thxs all for your posts, looks like this is going to turn into a bit of a project

Do a search for Brown Multiplug and you'll find lots about it - basically chop it out!

It's probably worth cleaning up all the multiplugs etc and making sure all the earths are connected. The alarm may well have reset itself, not sure how your particular one works though to be honest. If it has remote unlock then chances are it may need recoding.

See what it's like after trying to turn it over by hand, if it's ok then I would suggest it may be an electrical fault? Have you checked that there's a 12v going to the started motor?

managed to get a bit done tonight,

took spark plugs out and turned engine over by hand, seemed to turn fine

took brown plug apart and cleaned it,it was very corroded, plugged it in and now starter makes a clicking noise, i notice when i turn the key now i have no lights on dash!

i have brand new battery so do you think my starter is broke?

noticed while under the car there is a metal water hose that runs along the inner wing joining 2 hoses together, looks very corroded any 1 know how much to replace?

thxs in advance for any suggestions

'sticky starter'

Your starter is going to have a sticky solenoid. i used to have to tap mine with a hammer of sorts (a metal pole) to free it up whilst a mate tried to start it.

best thing to do it cut the multi plug out all together! resolder the wires together.

I would be surprised if you car is going to have a healthy engine, leavign it sit for so long with water in will not do its inners any favours!

its called a heater matrix hose i think, they are about £14 from ebay.

if i were you, get it on some hard standing, get it on stands and get it all refreshed over a few months.

The water pipe on the offside inner wing is available from Peugeot:

Intermediate Pipe Part No. 130778 £17.28

Cheaper than the ones also available on e-bay.

I may have missed it but I don't see any reference to you changing the timing belt. If you haven't, I'd change the belt, water pump and tensioner before even starting the engine again. It isn't a bad job on an 8v, the kit is quite cheap and the consequences of it breaking very bad.
