A Few Basic Questions

OK I have located a very late 1.9. Took it for a drive, all is fine. It's been looked after in its past. 4 owners etc etc However it has been lowered which in itself isn't an issue. But on the test drive I could hear knocking or rattling from the rear as if for eg the top mount (if fitted i.e on a BMW) is loose or worn. Handled very well, very planted and the roads I was on were rough.

Beam looks fine, no stupid angles, distances all look good. So could this be the exhaust heat shield knocking a bit as I can't see anything else moving under there.

Anyhow the other question surrounds the sunroof. One of the side trims that normally is fixed to the glass is still in the open position but the glass is closed. Is it easy (or relative) to get the guides that fit to the glass back into place?

So this is a late (plastic inlet) 1.9 with PAS, grey interior, a decent service history that's been looked after. It has a magnex 4 branch, small blow in there somewhere and a magnex exhaust system. Hopefully picking it up later today and will bring along to pugfest on Sunday.

Plans are to do the bits needed, return the car to the std ride height (how hard will this be?) and be my misses daily shopper (or every other day!).

Cant help with most of that, but it being lowered brings up a few things, Mine is about 2" off the floor at lowest point, thats the exaust they really do swing low. They will scrape and ping, sounds a bit rattly but the biggest thing you will get is the bar squeeking. it sounds a bit worrying if there is a rattle. Shouldnt be too hard a fix but i would suggest you look a little closer into it, ALSO if its lowered that much i would suggest, this sounds odd, but lining the fuel filler pipe with metal tubing, after a while the wheel will wear though the pipe and any fuel you try and put in the car, a fair proportion will end up around your feet. very irritating, especially with the price of the stuff. so just a bit of advice on that one!

cheers for that. It's not too bad, probably in line with my track car really. It does sound though like a shock is rattling when going over rough surfaces. No squeaks though which is good. As I said I couldn't hear any other noises apart from this. But over the summer hols I intend to return it all back to normal.

I had knocking on my front passenger side and there was play in the balljoint, might be that.

interesting, it sounded like the rear but as my hearing cannot be relied upon I'll mark that down for investigation.

it is quite likely to be the exhaust heatshields if its a light metallic rattling.

a clunking may be the front beam mounts or a wheel bearing.

Possibly the spare wheel carrier bouncing about, especially if hasn't got a wheel in there?

cheers chaps, there was a wheel in there so I counted that out but until I get it home and have a good look then I can't rule much out. I am thinking exhaust shield.

Just because the beam looks OK doesn;t mean it is, The last one I did passed a MOT within 4 weeks and drove spot on, No movement in the back or odd sounds, Took it apart to raise it and the complete beam was scrap.

£750.00 later a new beam was fitted

I've had a rattling from the rear before and couldn't trace it. After tearing my hair out, I found a slightly loose shocker bolt.

well that is the problem with buying a used car I suppose. Regardless of the checks etc you just don't know exactly what you're getting.

When its home I'l have a good look and report back.

Out of interest, what is this "plastic inlet" on the late model 1.9s you talk about ? I had (according to the garages who looked up my chassis number) the 14th to last made 1.9 GTi on an L reg and my inlet manifold was a standard metal item. :D

that's the type but mine has a black header tank fitted.

Collected it yesterday, my wife drove it home, went well enough although it does rattle a bit BUT the main thing everything works.

Anyhow I believe now the knocking to be related to the front so will investigate that when I get the chance.

an update on this late 205.

The issues we had were as follows:

The knocking noise, just couldn't fathom out where it was coming from, anyhow turned out to be a knackered drop link to the anti roll bar and I only found this out when I had it on the ramps at the unit I sub let. So a new set later (the old ones had to be cut off!) and the knocking has gone.

The driving lamps, one was broken, turned out that one was a cibie and one was a denji, so I got two better items from Baz, now fitted and both work, the front looks a lot tidier now however I think I'd like to put the genuine cibies on when I can.

The horn, basically didn't work. Years ago (talking 11+) we had an old 1.9 and the horn packed up, I bought a new one from Pug, and never fitted it, well I fitted it to the new one, so that's another item ticked off the list.

Whilst having the grille/lamp off to do the horn I realised that the headlamp adjuster was wrongly fitted? Now the lamp on that side always appeared to be slightly out, can't say why or how much just it didn't look correct and it was the adjuster not being installed as it should be, so all that came off and once again a successful refit took place.

The sunroof, I took it all apart, and off the runners, refitted it and now that slides as it should.

So next is to replace exhaust hangers as they've seen better days & replace the large rear speakers with OE type in their original locations and replace the bowed parcel shelf that holds the larger speakers currently fitted. I have a new rear shelf in the garage so that'll complete that.

So after this is done I need to get the paintwork scrubbed up and the small dink in the bonnet (above one lamp) sorted but as the car sits outside whilst our kitchen takes its place in our garage then that'll have to wait.

There you go, a late 205 which I wanted have to admit is being brought back slowly. Its not bad by any mark but its in need. However it drives so nice, the seats are not sagging and the bolsters are like new so to me it'll be worth it. Pics to follow.
