Which Oil To Run In Mi16

Recommended Posts

blessed6383

have been searching on net tonight and have found that some people use 0-40 oil in there mi16 and some use 10-40.

i have always use magnatec 10-40 before and never had any probs but found some people advise differently if running race/rally cams etc

does anyone have any info on this? or is it just personal choice?

Use whatever you want, if you haven't had any problems with what you use now, why change?

engine killer

I am currently running 10w40 as recommended by service menu. Actually I have tried the 5W40 and 0W40 before, the engine rev went quicker but mechanic said the protection should drop quite a lot after the engine heated up.

So, why change? Why do I have to speed up the wear of it if I can have better protection?

I can't believe I'm going to say this, but "do a search" for posts by oilman.

He wrote a comprehensive guide about oils.

The 40 part of 0w40, 5w40 and 10w40 is the same stability at higher temperature, so the mechanic is wrong. The first number accounts for its characteristics at lower temperatures.

He also ran a thread for people to ask what oils he would recommend and for the most part MI16 owners were advised to run 5w40.

A 10w-40 semi synthetic with regular changes will be just fine, 0w-40 and 5w-40 oils are synthetics. These protect better and last longer then the semi synthetic. All semi synthetics are 100% mineral base.

Cheers

Very true about the 40 weight making them the same at higher temps it's the first part which can wreck engines though as the car warms up etc. I can show you many Porsche enthusiasts who put in 0W40 as it's 'the best oil' (read what they were told at Halfords LOL) who have come back with leaking oil seals (too thin oil) and one or two with shot bores.

But as above I'd try a good 10W40 like Total's 10W40 or at least that worked well in my Gti-6.

Stu

Ive always ran 10-40 in mine with frequent changes after every 3rd trackday or so, or every six months whichever came sooner, no problems to date :D *touches wood*...

Thats just the generic GSF 10-40 too :D
