Cti Rear Window Replacement

Recommended Posts

Guest Altnafeadh

Help! The thoughtful seller of my newly acquired 1986 205 1.6 Cti managed to put his fist through the rear window when demonstrating how the roof folded. Car is almost mint, and having covered only 24K since new, it was gutting to have the rear window ruined before i'd even got it on the road!

Anyway, I have managed to acquire a new 'replacement' rear window off e-bay, but the zip is not original and therefore cannot be easily fitted without the whole roof lining being dismantled. Having spent most of the day trying to get the roof to bits, without success, does anyone know of, or have a manual/description, as to how you replace the fixed section of zip in the roof lining?? The lower fixings appear simple, but I cannot seem to release the bolted bar from within the roof lining..

After that, can anyone give me guidance where I could get the damaged window repaired? [/font]

Hi - from memory, so check as you go!

Remove parcel shelf and cover panel, remove (5?) 10mm bolts and remove rear retaining bar.

Remove screws from base of quarter panel and 10mm bolt from inside of hood.

Remove seal between rear window and hood and peel glued vinyl from flat part of hood around window.

Inside car, remove hood hinge covers and untie the hood ties. unclip and remove the plastic retainer and clips holding the rear quarter of hood.

Now working from where the zip is you should have access to a gold colour retaining bar for the roof lining which is held in place at the rear(?) with 2x phillips screws which once undone, allow you to slide the retainer off the rear of the hood hoop.

You should now have access to some small (7mm?) nuts fitted through the hoop and accessed from underneath -undo these and the rear of the hood can be lifted off.

You then need to drill out pop rivets at either end of the bar holding the zip in - and voila - ready to re-assemble.

Before starting I would get some decent contact adhesive, pop rivets and riveter , some stainless countersunk bolts about 25mm long and with 7mm nuts and washers. Local chandlers are a good source of glue and bolts.

Double check that the rear window zip teeth are the same. There are a couple of types on a CTI from what I have heard. if the rest of the window is good, why not get the clear bit replaced by taking the window to a sailmakers. There are bound to be some around Hoylake etc near you

Is this the 86 white one on Ebay?

Looked a tidy car and extremely rare with such low miles.

See if you can get it accross to one of our Lancs meets.

Good luck with the roof/window!

Love my CTI - almost as much as the GTI.

Hi Stu,

Yep. this was the white 86 CTi listed on e-bay last week.

I phoned the seller when the reserve wasn't met and made him an offer. To say I think I got a bargain would be an understatement.

I've driven it for a couple of hundred 'hood down' miles in the last week without problem, and it seems to be freeing up nicely now.

That said, given the mileage and amazing condition, I am now looking for a GTi that I can drive while I try to keep the CTi in near original condition.

Will try to get across to the next lancashire met.

Now that is a good idea, thanks. The window surround is in very good condition, so will make a trip to a chandlers tomorrow and see what they can do for me.

Sounds like a Stu Two!

Let us know how you get on with the rear screen replacement as mine has gone a bit milky

Haha!

I'd love to be able to drive my GTI around! (it's been off the road for 11 months)

I painted under the arches on the CTI over the weekend - looks factory fresh now and makes a big difference, the 4x4 stance makes them look sparkling. 8 hrs well spent!

Be great to see this low miler in the 'metal'

Henry - get some AutoGlym Super Resin Polish on the plastic window - inside and out - made mine look like new when i first got it.

I'll give that a whirl Stu, especially as it is only £1.74 in Sainsburys :)
