Sunroof Removal And Blanking

Recommended Posts

rob.duke

Hi Folks,

I currently have a 205 track car which is rapidly becoming more track biased than road.

Sadly it still has the huge (and probably massively heavy) glass sliding roof and i assume it's a worthwhile effort to remove.

I really don't want to replace the whole roof, and i'm not a fan of the metal blanking plate, has anyone experimented with blanking using a carbon fibre sheet or similar? Either blanking just the sunroof area or the whole roof area (seen someone on the net who does carbon roofskins, but doesn't list for the 205)

Cheers

Rob

A couple of years ago I was quoted About £300 plus paint for a new roof. Wish i'd done it now.

The sunroof glass weigh's 18 kilo's if i remember correctly.

Peugeot don't have any roof skins left now when I asked just before Christmas.

I'm in teh same boat as you.

I have been thinking about just getting a vacum formed plastic sheet done - then bond it in.

Or a CF version.

But then it still leaves the sunroof rails and their holes - grommets? - but not very tidy.

I will probably get my expert mate to weld in a sheet and weld up the holes then spray.

I certainly won't go for a full roof skin, but I want something that won't scratch too easily and doesn't weight much.

Ive been thinking about this recently, If you could make a mould of a non-sunroof roofskin surly you could make one out of fiberglass and bond it on over the top of your existing roof and the blend in the sides. you'd still be able to see the old sunroof hole from the inside but from the outside I doubt you'd be able to tell. Failing that I know some people rivet or bond aluminum plate over the top, covering all the center section of the roof, Looks better than just covering the sunroof hole IMO. :P

Hi,

Thanks for the comments, I was thinking along the lines of moulding a full roof and bonding, possibly in CF, it would be expensive tho but should be a nice job.

Need to get rid of the 18 KG to offset my lardy frame!!

Does anyone know of any Fibreglass or Carbon Fibre specialists in the north?

Also!!

My car is stripped pretty much totally at the mo, apart from headlining due to still having sunroof.

Is there any reason why this can't come out? I realise i would lose the sliding shade but any other issues?

Cheers

Carbon fibre !!!! It would cost you an absolute fortune.

If you want to compete properly rather than just do trackdays you would be wise to look in the blue book as i'm certain you wont be allowed to if you replace the roof with anything but steel.

I wouldn't want to be in it if you used carbon fibre or fibre glass.

To be honest by the time you've paid for a carbon fiber skin to be made up you'd be better of paying a bodyshop to fit a proper roofskin. Or have a go yourself, I did mine with the roofskin off a 1.1 trio it's not that bigger job. Pugnut is currently doing one In his Roofskin replacment thread . Worth considering maybe
