1.6 Does Anyone Know Where That Lil Spacer Goes?

hi got a 1.9 runing 180bhp through a 1.6 lift up reverse box (be1 i think)

obvs the box was shagd so i have rebuilt it put it all together with new sincros etc

the problem i have is with the diff!

when i took the diff casing off the bearing shells and diff just fell out and with it a little black 1 or 2mm spacer/shim so i dont know wher it goes back. obviously it either goes to the neerside or ofside of the diff on the outside of the bearings but depending on which side i put it it will moove the crown wheel to the left or right by 1 or 2mm. normaly it probs wouldnt matter but obvs with silly power going through i would like it to be right.. can anyone help??
