Hey guys,

my 205 Mi16 has broken down. The problem happened on main road whilst driving along and the car lost power. The symptoms are:

Vehicle idles ok (doesn't seem to have a missfire)

Vehicle cannot be reved up (Has to be with the tinyest bit of throttle) an almost bogging down and trying to cut out.

Its not drivable due to this as it seems to be when demand is placed on theengine it can't do it. I have unplugged all the sensors and tried it with no real differenc- any help would be ace!

Or any one in portsmouth with a 205 i could look at

sounds like it could be a air leak maybe

Try replugging the AFM.

Check inside the distributor cap.

I would say ECU temp sensor would be worth swapping if you have a spare, check afm plug also. If none of those then i'd remove crank sensor and take a look at that, look at coil, ignition amp, swap them if you have spares, could be a few things!

sounds like TPS or AFM fault.

Yes i was leaning towards a ignition amp my self. I have used a multimeter to check the AFM and it seems to be working ok.

Surley if it was crank sensor it wouldn't run period? I'm also thinking coil but again it idles which seems strange.

Doesn't a tempsensor only adjust the richness?

Temp sensor won;t cause your problem, As said could be the AFM or the wires which I have found to fail under load or when the engine move's,

Amp's temp to fail when warm and hence under load the engine either missfires/cut's out.

Crank sensors too either work or not

Could be the cap so worth a check as they never seem to last very long, I know on Sime's one the centre part had completely gone thou it did run

Yes sounds like this to me also, I had the problem when I had an mi in mine while at a track day, after heavy breaking I would lose power for a bit, found it to be the wiring to the afm and was moving under breaking then hard acceleration.

Well i removed and checked the dizzy cap found it completly broken up and missing, renewed it but no cure :)

Tried a differnt TPS still no cure so how would be the best wy to fully test the AFM?

unplug the ecu and buzz through to the AFM.

Surely that will only confirm continuity? how can i check for correct operation?

I once had an identical problem many moons ago and it turned out to be a dodgy AFM. The flap had got stuck for some reason, and obviously when the engine tried to induct, it couldnt. Remove afm and push the flap open with your finger to check it moves freely.

yes, thought you had checked the AFM already?

what with the age of the wiring these days its wise to check it, AFM can be checked by testing that you have no break in resistance as you move the flap in the AFM with the meter on pins 2 and 3 IIRC.

yes i done a resistance check and it varied with the flap which is free hance thinking thats good.

could it be the ignition amp- what are those symptoms

Exactly the same happened to me. Mine had been stalling in traffic a few days before. Coast up to lights etc and the revs would drop too far, then bounce up, then drop again, then bounce up, then drop again and then stall. Was a nightmare trying to keep it balanced on the throttle. A few days later I started it up and it wouldn't run. Eventually found the flap stuck in the wide open position. It was practically jammed solid, and when I freed it off it had virtually no springiness left in it. Even after taking it apart and playing with the spring tension it was no good, and I had to replace it.

EDIT: just seen you've checked it already. Sorry.

Right after renewing the Ignition amp, dizzy and rotor, coil and swapped the TPS for a good one- STILL NO CURE!

Is any one local to windsor that has a mi16 AFM i could poss try?
