(probably) Simple Starting Problem

Recommended Posts

CosKev
I might tow it down the road and burn it out.

I'll have to arrange to do this, do you seriously think that's all it is? The starter seems to crank it over pretty well and the battery is fully charged.

I can't help but think I have cocked something up putting it back together. I should never have attempted it.

Yeah,I had a diesel battery, charger on boost start and a recon starter and mine would not start :)

Towed it down the road in 2nd gear for a few hundred yards and up she fired :(

Kept it running 10 mins, turned it off and started off the key fine ever since ;)

You would need the dizzy timing out ALONG way IMO to stop it starting.

Thanks to dobbo...

Put the old ignition amp and coil on and it fired up with some easy-start and ran. The revs started rising rapidly though so had to cut the engine - any idea what this might be? The throttle cable seems to be seated correctly.

(I am a f*ck site happier now. Although it's not on the road yet.....)

East start causes the revs to rise quickly,I used to start an old Escort van with the stuff,Quite interesting at 5am on a cold winter morning !!

I would try restarting it without easy start and see what happens.

Ah right, makes sense. I will screw it all back together and give it another go (I bet it doesn't start again!).

Revs rising fast will not be easy start on a petrol. Yes this does happen on a diesel. On a petrol revs rising rapidly means a big air leak somewhere.

Try cleaning on both the head and inlet where the gasket sits, i once had an air leak there and had similar problems and get yourself a new gasket, make sure teh surface is smooth.

Edit:

Also screw both the idle screws in as far as it can go there should be 2 one directly on top of the thottle body and located further back to the left with a little clip on it, which controls how much slack you get on the accelerator cable they should carm it down abit, also theres 2 fittings for the cable to sit on, try it on both levels, that also controls the slack.

Well I've had the inlet manifold off and the throttle body so will check all those as suggested.

I did fit new gaskets but I notice the loud pedal doesn't seem to have as much travel as it did - so perhaps the cable is seated wrong.

Did it pop out the exhaust or the air filter?

It did yesterday (when old amp and coil was on) but not today, it seemed to burble a little then rev pretty cleanly up till I killed it.

I don't recall any dodgy noises after I turned the ignition off.

disconnect the accelerator cable from the throttle and try it without it connected like you sed "pedal doesn't seem to have as much travel as it did"

let us know how it goes.

Is the oil filler neck bolt in on side of the inlet?

AFM on right way round?

Everything plugged in that should be?
