Fitting 406 Dials, 2 Issues Remaining

Recommended Posts

I've fitted the lovely looking 406 dials with the chrome surrounds and have everything I need working except for the fuel level, and it would be quite handy to have it.

Does anyone have a clue on how this would work?

This is what I have come up with going from the wiring diagram and the help of autodata via sorrentomark.

Pin 32 from the ecu is the signal for the fuel gauge, this goes via a trip cpu (7210). It seems the trip cpu feeds off this signal and isnt changing it but I could be wrong? But this trip cpu... on the 406 does it have a seperate display for the fuel consuption/fuel remaining or does it go through the milege counter and you flick through it by twisting the black knob on the dials?

The main problem I have is knowing which wire or wires (FL gauge has 2 wires coming from it) feeds the ecu from the FL sender. I know which wire comes from the ecu afaik. Autodata doesnt seem to show this info.

The last thing is my speedo, its over reading by around 20%. The gearbox I have came from a 406 with 15" wheels so seems a bit much to be 20% out! I have 195/50/15 tyres the 406 must of been 55/60 profiles at the most. When im doin 60mph im really doing 50mph via gps. Do any electonic wizards know if I can make a box of tricks to convert the signal? Adjustable resistor or something?

Thanks in advance

Stu

Oops this should have been in the interior section

you need a small microcontroller that captures the impulses, counts the delay between them and multiplies this with a fixed correction value, then sends this out to the gauge.

should be no problem developing this, just a small pic (16f627 or similar) and some coding.

Pin 32 on the engine ECU is only used by the trip computer. The fuel guage sender is connected straight to the fuel gauge as it does on a 205. What year 406 clocks are you using? Have you changed the VSS on the gearbox? is it a 2 pin or 3 pin one?

Sorry I have been away on a course all week and havnt had net access, only on my phone! I can read posts but I cant reply to threads or pm's. Apologies for the delay in replying to your prompt replies.

Ar thats what I thought :o:lol:

Can I get all these bits from maplins? I havnt a clue how i'd build such a contraption, could you give any detailed info.

I'll get some up tomorrow for ya fella!

Ade,

Ade, im using the early style dials they must be 98 to 2001 I think, non multiplex. The standard 2 pin VSS sender is in the coupe gearbox. I have pin

11 and 15 left on the yellow connector and these seen to come from the trip computer. Any other wires I have left are for lights I dont need like the ABS, Airbags etc, unless I have mis-traced them. Or wired something wrong :( it has confused me a bit as in the wiring diagram if you follow pin 32 it ends up at the fuel gauge.

Do you know which wire controls the fuel gauge if it goes straight to the dials?

Do I need a seperate controller for the trip computer or can I get I working from the engine ecu?

Thanks all

Stu
