Tapping Mi

Recommended Posts

Anyone had this problem with a mi, when driving/running its very tappy from the top end, i'm quite certain its not he hydrolic lifters as i have put a new set in, refurb the old set so thats twice the tappets have been in and out!! the head is back off again and i have another head on the way, i was wondering if that when the tappets fit into the head, can they get stuck? i only say because this time when i took it apart, 2 of the lifters were stuck down, once i gave them a tap they released, maybe its this?

i'm also quite sure that i havent got a bent valve as the previous time when i took cams out i presurised the bores with a air line and it didnt leak.

I had a tapping Mi a few years ago, it turned out to be a little end, as I found out when it exited through the block about 6 months later.

I had a bent valve, well 2 on different cylinders... and the valves still sealed (tested by parrafin in the combustion chambers with the head upside down)

Was enough to give horrible tap, but only from say 3k rpm upwards.

Unfortunatly you will never know may unless you dissasemble the head as it was only visible be spinning the valve and watching the imbalance of the head if that makes sense.

I spotted my bent valve when lapping them, could hardly see it at all but it was there.

yeah i got ya, i'm 99% sure its not bottom end as i put new rods in when doing shell's etc, i'm going to take all the valves out and check them when my spring compresser turns up from flea bay!!
