Proper Throttle Pot To Fit On 8v Gti Throttle Body?

Recommended Posts

Tom Fenton

So my car has refused to play ball this evening, of course the first thing to do is plug the laptop in, to find the TPS has gone haywire. It was a brand new one from a source that shall remain nameless (for now) and so has done 1700 miles. Not very impressed. I'll be ordering a replacement for now tomorrow, but what I was wondering, is if Bosch made a proper sweeping TPS that fits in the same place as the standard throttle switch on a GTI.

Looking on you-know-where there are a couple of possibles, one off an Escort RS Turbo, another off a SAAB.

SO the million dollar question, anyone know if any of these are a proper throttle POT and not a switch?

Another question, those of you out there on aftermarket management, what throttle pots are you using?

Cheers

Tom

ZX volcane, i.e Motronic MP3.1, amongst others will fit on there if the spindle is trimmed down if memory serves me correctly, they use the same throttle body casting but a shorter spindle.

I'll double check tomorrow the exact differences, still have the old throttle body about somewhere to compare to.

I'm using the emerald supllied one and it seems fine .

I had a laser cut plate done that just screws on the throttle body , i may have one spare if you are interested Tom .

I'll have a look in the garage tonight

Its an Emerald one on there at the moment, I made an alloy plate to mount it, but with how long its lasted I'm not too impressed at the moment!

I'm ordering a new one today so we'll see how it lasts, but if there is a direct fit Bosch part that may be a good swap.

The emerald supplied one which is the same as the basic jenvey one aswell I've found lasts up to 6months if you're lucky. I did by a shinee expensive one from Jenvy (which has the plug the other way round to the other one) and never used it. Which you're welcome to take off me I'm not likely to be using it any time soon.

It seems they're very sensitive to any lateral loading on them.

I used an MPI Rover one on mine Tom, same drive as an Mi throttle pot, which i seem to remember being the same as an 8v T/B?

It will fit straight on, but you still need an adapter plate because when the TPS is against the idle stop / travel its not inline with the throttle threads. An adpater palte wouldn't have to be quite so fancy & only a few mm would need trimming off the spindle for it all to sit down fine.

I've got a solex TPS downstairs which I checked against the oe switch & tb to make sure.

I'll try to get a picture of the TPS on the TB tomorrow to show exactly what I mean better.

Graham.

Hopefully that shows what I meant better.

I understand what you mean now, the spindle must be different on the MP3.1 zx as the lugs are in the same place, might as well use the ZX T/B if you find one in a scrappy when looking for the TPS

Ah I see. I've had the replacement through today so my car is back up and running, however I may look into making a slightly different adaptor plate, as the TPS has a raised moulded lip that could be made to fit inside a hole in the adaptor plate, which would hopefully take the movement away and help it last longer.

Jetronic & MP3.1 (ZX) tb throttle spindle differences;

I'm sure it wouldn't take much to re-profile the Jetronic spindle to work with the MP3.1 TPS.

I think an adapter plate from a Cavalier was used on my skip to mate the standard TB to a TPS suitable for a 3.1 system and the wires reversed.
