Another Starter Problem Question

Recommended Posts

gav_mi16

My g/f standard 205 GTi 1.6 has had an ongoing problem, but i've never had the chance to investigate it when it happens, until today, but it bloody well decides to rain and not stop

Anyway, when it happens, nothing happens, turn key and nothing, no click or anything, but you can hear the fuel pump so it's not the immobilisor. The interior light dims so something is taking power. But if the solinoid is not engaging, what is drawing the power?

If you wait a while 5-10mins it might work, sometimes rocking it in 4th works, sometimes it has to be a push start, usually it happens when your in a hurry so i can't spend time and see what it is while it's happening.

Main engine earth is good.

i had this.

it will be your starter solenoid wire corroded. either at the brown multi or the wire its self.

petrol station forecourts and the supermarket were favourite places for it to happen to me .

it is a light blue wire no 46A . could also be the end thats just coroded.

Agreed I've had this too. Clean it all up and it should be fine.

Thanks for the replies chaps.

Well, the solenoid wire was pretty corroded, even when cutting into it to try and add a new connector. What's weird though it was showing very little resistance from the brown connector to the end 0.2ohm, which is good!

Anyway, replaced this with a new slightly fatter wire up to the brown connector. 46B at the other end strangely.

I'll keep my fingers crossed now and hope the g/f has no more problems with it!
